In order to make the hymns most serviceable to the men in our Army and Navy, the music has been pitched within the singing range of the average man; and has been supplied with parts for tenor and bass voices. These tunes have also been scored for military bands by a Government Commission. We desire to make grateful acknowledgment for the permission to use these tunes granted by the Church Pension Fund and others who hold copyrights, as noted on the various pages. We are indebted to Mr. Burton T. Scales, Director of Music, Girard College and Glee Club of the University of Pennsylvania, for his skilful work in arranging the counter point settings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For Soldiers and Sailors: An Abridgment of the Book of Common Worship The 129th General Assembly of The Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, meeting at Dallas, Texas, in a solemn and impressive service held on Monday afternoon. May 21, 1917, placed the entire resources of the Church at the disposal of the Government in carrying on the present war. A National Service Commission was appointed and instructed to call upon any or all of the agencies and resources of the Church for their help in the present crisis. The Commission has undertaken a comprehensive work covering every phase of the national and international situation in which the Church of Jesus Christ may properly be engaged. One of its tasks is to follow, with its special interest, the sons of the Church who may have enlisted as soldiers and sailors. The Commission, therefore, has authorized, through the loyal cooperation of the Board of Publication and Sabbath School Work, the publication of this abridgment of the Book of Common Worship. It is hoped and believed that this already approved volume will find a worthy place in camp and field and on shipboard, in supplying definite spiritual needs on the part of enlisted men and in furnishing suitable material, including an appropriate form of worship, to those who are engaged in special religious work for the men.
