Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a significant point in the life of an individual or an organization, it is normal that one reminisces and savors the qualities of the past. In doing so, one may learn of facts and factors that explain the present and even project into the future. So it is with the Second World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology. We can at this time avail ourselves of a panoramic view, not only of the present but also an exposure of the past, and a glimpse of what lies ahead. When Dr. Jane Somerville and Professor Fergus Macartney proposed developing a World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology, the factors of vision and imagina tion were driving forces. These, with the aid both of hard work and dedication to purpose, led to the being of the First Congress. The major success of that meeting was not without premonitory concerns as to the width of multinational acceptance of a concept that Pediatric Cardiol ogy had come of age and a firm foundation for academic interchange existed. The Congress showed that much had been learned, and that there were many eager to share of accumulated knowledge and reflections of skills with the very many hundreds who came to the First Congress. The responses to the First Congress were so enthusiastic that the idea of having a continuum of World Congresses of Pediatric Cardiology was widely accepted. I do not know that the subject was even debated after the First Congress went into session.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances have revolutionized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in pediatric cardiology. Powerful new diagnostic techniques include color Doppler echocardiography, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Catheter-directed treatment of cardiac lesions with balloons and stents has become the treatment of choice, and cardiac arrhythmias in infancy and childhood are treated with radio-frequency ablation. To provide an update on these and other recent developments, the First Asian-Pacific Symposium on Pediatric Cardiology was held in Taipei in November 1994, attended by pediatricians, cardiologists, and surgeons, many of them of world renown. This book, a collection of the papers presented at the symposium, will contribute to improved recognition, understanding, and treatment of many important congenital and acquired heart problems in children. It will be of special interest to pathologists, pediatricians, cardiologists, and surgeons whose work involves care of infants and children with heart disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Richard Alan Stikeman, an incredible businessman, community leader, and family man, died from malignant mesothelioma, his family, friends, and community established the Stikeman Fund for Surgical Advancement and the Stikeman Visiting Professorship in order to commemorate him. Dr Dag Munro, Stikeman's treating surgeon, proposed the concept of an annual visiting professor as a unique way to honour his patient. The primary goal of the fund was to enhance surgical education for students, residents, and faculty in the McGill University Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. In the words of one of the founders – Richard's brother Heward Stikeman – it should "sharpen people" and keep McGill's program at the forefront of cardiothoracic education. Former residents were invited to return on an annual basis. Surgical research was added to the program and benefited from the wisdom of fifty world-class visitors. This contributed to a high degree of loyalty, adhesion, and philanthropy to the division. The Stikeman Visiting Professorship has thus unified cardiothoracic surgery under the McGill umbrella: Dr A.R.C. Dobell identified the professorship as the glue that holds the division together. The Stikeman Visiting Professorship has emerged over the years as an important McGill legacy, its growth and duration a tribute to its founders, builders, and supporters. This book is a celebration of that legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart disease in children has a number of diagnostic traps for the unwary, and all of us involved in the specialty have been caught at one time or another. For example, it is sometimes very difficult to differentiate between respiratory and cardiac disease in infants and between neurological and cardiac conditions in older children, and the consequences of taking the wrong path can be significant. This book is a collection of cases highlighting situations which can ensnare even the best cardiologist. Although they illustrate the importance of taking a good history and performing a thorough examination, the most important lesson is learning to keep an open mind and develop the ability to think laterally. As clinicians we need to have the confidence to make a decision for our patients but also the humility to be able to acknowledge that we don’t always get it right first time, and it is imperative that we learn from the experience. We hope the reader will find these short chapters interesting and while they are not evidence-based medicine in the true sense, they do represent a wide range of clinical experience from which we can all learn.
