This carefully curated exposé separates the status-quo, tourist ale trail from the hottest, off-the-beaten-track beer spots that make Portland world renowned. A total of 10 bike routes are included, featuring detailed maps and accompanying cue sheets for cyclists of any level, with options to extend each of the five brew tours into longer rides. Locals and visitors alike, from serious beer geeks to cycling aficionados, will want to slip this book into their jersey pockets and panniers as they uncover the city's booming beer scene.

Book excerpt: When your horse suddenly develops a performance problem or a bad attitude and neither seem to be remedied by new training techniques or medical care, you often face months—even years—of frustration and career limitation. Dr. Joyce Harman, veterinarian and respected saddle-fitting expert, states that 75 percent of horses with such issues are simply reacting to pain caused by ill-fitting saddles. And, as she explains in this thorough and highly illustrated book, poor saddle fit can be corrected with patience and know-how.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there has been steady progress in understanding aspects of epitaxial growth throughout the last 30 years of modern surface science, work in this area has intensified greatly in the last 5 years. A number of factors have contributed to this expansion. One has been the general trend in surface science to tackle problems of increasing complexity as confidence is gained in the methodology, so for example, the role of oxide/metal interfaces in determining the properties of many practical supported catalysts is now being explored in greater detail. A second factor is the recognition of the potential importance of artificial multilayer materials not only in semiconductor devices but also in metal/metal systems because of their novel magnetic properties. Perhaps even more important than either of these application areas, however, is the newly-discovered power of scanning probe microscopies, and most notably scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), to provide the means to study epitaxial growth phenomena on an atomic scale under a wide range of conditions. These techniques have also contributed to revitalised interest in methods of fabricating and exploiting artificial structures (lateral as well as in layers) on a nanometre scale. This volume, on Growth and Properties of Ultrathin Epitaxial Layers, includes a collection of articles which reflects the present state of activity in this field. The emphasis is on metals and oxides rather than semiconductors.

Joe Wiebe, the Thirsty Writer, revisits the established and explores the province’s freshest new hoppy IPAs and strong stouts in this completely revised and updated guide. Microbrewing has exploded into a significant figure in the marketplace—the market share for artisanal beer climbed to 19 percent in 2013—and craft beer has become prominent in restaurants, taprooms and craft beer converts are carrying home growlers of creative and delicious brews. From the Kootenays to the west coast of Vancouver Island, the craft beer scene is booming. With profiles of BC’s finest craft breweries, as well as tap lists, bottle shops and an insider’s look at the people behind the kegs and casks, this second edition of Craft Beer Revolution explains how to best experience the beer phenomenon that’s sweeping the province.

Book excerpt: Is the universe actually a giant quantum computer? According to Seth Lloyd, the answer is yes. All interactions between particles in the universe, Lloyd explains, convey not only energy but also information–in other words, particles not only collide, they compute. What is the entire universe computing, ultimately? “Its own dynamical evolution,” he says. “As the computation proceeds, reality unfolds.” Programming the Universe, a wonderfully accessible book, presents an original and compelling vision of reality, revealing our world in an entirely new light.
