Book excerpt: Honor Thy Father continues the story of a deeply religious man, his son, and seven daughters. In the beginning, Josef Kusak dedicates his firstborn to the Lord; other sons will follow to love the land as he does. But as the years go by and daughters arrive to fill his house, he is torn between honoring his promise to God and holding on to the son who would inherit the land and carry on the Kusak name. The conflict comes to a head in his eightieth year when his son becomes impatient for the land he was promised. After a lifetime of building a family legacy, Josef Kusak faces betrayal from the son who was to inherit not only the land but also a spiritual legacy of faith. In an effort to make things right with God and give his son the freedom to choose his own path, he turns to his daughters. The middle daughter returns to the land as a peacemaker and finds herself embroiled in a battle that is bigger than the land takeover her brother has in mind. The battle takes her to New York, Toronto, and Vancouver in search of the lost genes of the blue iris. Instead of locating mink, Corrine Jorrell finds a Canadian troubadour and more adventure than the novels she aspires to write. She begins a game that will bring her father peace of mind and change her brother's heart. The game that will bring Jean-Pierre Robillard to Oregon is filled with false impressions and ironic humor as a small-town teacher pits herself against a man of the world. As the game continues, a parable comes to life, a story that will change Andrew Kusak into the man he was meant to be, a man who honors his father and his God.

Book excerpt: In Honor Thy Gods Jon Mikalson uses the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides to explore popular religious beliefs and practices of Athenians in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. and examines how these playwrights portrayed, manipulated, and otherwise represented popular religion in their plays. He discusses the central role of honor in ancient Athenian piety and shows that the values of popular piety are not only reflected but also reaffirmed in tragedies. Mikalson begins by examining what tragic characters and choruses have to say about the nature of the gods and their intervention in human affairs. Then, by tracing the fortunes of diverse characters -- among them Creon and Antigone, Ajax and Odysseus, Hippolytus, Pentheus, and even Athens and Troy -- he shows that in tragedy those who violate or challenge contemporary popular religious beliefs suffer, while those who support these beliefs are rewarded. The beliefs considered in Mikalson's analysis include Athenians' views on matters regarding asylum, the roles of guests and hosts, oaths, the various forms of divination, health and healing, sacrifice, pollution, the religious responsibilities of parents, children, and citizens, homicide, the dead, and the afterlife. After summarizing the vairous forms of piety and impiety related to these beliefs found in the tragedies, Mikalson isolates "honoring the gods" as the fundamental concept of Greek piety. He concludes by describing the different relationships of the three tragedians to the religion of their time and their audience, arguing that the tragedies of Euripides most consistently support the values of popular religion.

A man’s word is his bond. His family is his strength. His heart is his own. Superstar musician Caden Granger has spent years running from love, commitment and family.
