Book excerpt: The great eighteenth century portraitist comes to life in this “gritty, bawdy and funny” rags to riches novel told in the voice of the artist himself (The New York Times). William Hogarth was London’s artist par excellence, and his work—especially his satirical series of “modern moral subjects”—supplies the most enduring vision of the ebullience, enjoyments, and social iniquities of the eighteenth century. And in I, Hogarth, he tells a ripping good yarn. From a childhood spent in a debtor’s prison to his death in the arms of his wife, Hogarth recounts the incredible story of how he maneuvered his way into the household of prominent artist Sir James Thornhill, and from there to become one of England’s best portrait painters. Through his marriage to Jane Thornhill, his fight for the Copyright Act, his unfortunate dip into politics, and his untimely death, “the voice in which Dean’s Hogarth tells his own story is rich and persuasive . . . Like stepping into a Hogarth painting” (The New York Times). “A brilliant exercise in imagination and storytelling.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Book excerpt: Ronald Paulson's authoritative study of the life of William Hogarth was first published in 1971 in two volumes. This latest work in three volumes represents a fully revised and updated text in the light of the author's changing views on Hogarth and his art, and on the social and political issues of the period. The general growth of knowledge of and interest in the 18th Century, including the works of historians during the 70s and 80s and surveys of other English painters, have contributed substantially to Professor Paulson's reassessment. In his study, Paulson sets out to discover answers to an entirely new set of questions: to examine not only the apparent nature of Hogarth's works, but also their underlying purpose, and the way in which the paintings are used to mythologise Hogarth's own life. Paulson wishes to differentiate those things Hogarth believed he was doing from those which, as part of the cultural milieu of the 18th Century, he was unconscious. From this study, Hogarth emerges as a more complex individual than that of the elitist Augustan satirist or the subversive popular artist. Volume I charts the emergence of Hogarth the man, placing him in the context of the art of his times. Volume II explores the peak of the artist's career and concentrates particularly on the production and consumption of his works. Volume II takes Hogarth from his fifty-third year to his death at sixty-seven.

Book excerpt: How William Hogarth and artists across Europe captured the new modernity of the 18th century, revealing themes still strikingly relevant today Illustrating the full range of Hogarth's most important paintings and prints, this book shows them in a new light, juxtaposed with work by major European contemporaries who influenced him or took their inspiration from him in their painting of modern life--including Watteau, Chardin, Troost, and Longhi. Hogarth is revealed not only as a key figure in British art history, but also as a major European artist. It is also a tale of four cities: London, Paris, Venice, and Amsterdam, represented in maps from the period. The themes of city life, social protest, sexuality, and satire, which come to the fore in the art of Hogarth and his contemporaries, are very much alive today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, updated edition of this illuminating study on William Hogarth, one of the eighteenth century’s most famous artists and satirists. William Hogarth (1697–1764) was one of the great eighteenth-century painters, a marvelous colorist, and an innovator at all levels of artistic expression. In this updated volume, art historian and Hogarth scholar David Bindman surveys the works of this artist whose wry humor and sharp wit was reflected in his prolific paintings and prints, including The Rake’s Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Hogarth was also a master of pictorial satire, highlighting the moral and political issues of the day with delightful detail and comedy—themes that resonate deeply with our times. This new edition has been specially updated to include a discussion of Hogarth’s representation of Black people in eighteenth-century Britain, a subject that has long been overlooked in his many works. Now revised with additional material and illustrated in color throughout, this is a vivid and incisive study of the artist.

Book excerpt: What is the artistic impulse uniting Robert Hooke's drawings of insects, George Stubbs's studies of horses, and Damien Hirst's pickled shark? In this new and spirited account of British art, Jonathan Jones argues for empiricism. From the Enlightenment to the present, British artists have shared a passion for looking hard at the world around them. Jones shows how this zeal for precision and careful observation paved the way for Realism, Impressionism, and the birth of modern art
