From a 160-year-old unsolved murder to a newcomer whose "healing hands" drew people from all over the country, the town has attracted its fair share of unique characters. Vladimir Nabokov came to pursue his favorite hobby, butterfly collecting, while writing his famously controversial novel, Lolita, and an actor turned entrepreneur became one of the foremost recyclers long before it was mainstream. Discover the story behind Ashland's golf course cemetery and the gloveless baseball team of 1884. Join local historian Joe Peterson as he explores the fascinating past of this colorful town.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Ashland This History of the Town of Ashland is Part I of the inventory of the archives of Ashland and is published separately at the request of the town; Part II, which will include the essay on governmental organization and records system, the sketches of town offices, and inventory of records, is ready for publication and will be issued at an early date. Together these two volumes will form a unit in the series bearing the title Inventory of the Town and City Archives of Massachusetts, prepared by the Historical Records Survey in Massachusetts. The inventory of the town archives of Ashland is the fourth in the series of such inventories covering the towns and cities of Middlesex County. It is anticipated that eventually the records of every governmental unit in the State will be listed. Copies of this volume and of every publication of the Massachusetts Historical Records Survey are distributed to prominent libraries of the nation and to the larger and more centrally located libraries of Massachusetts. "To bring together the records of the past and to house them in the buildings where they will be preserved for the use of men living in the future, a nation must believe in three things. It must believe in the past. It must believe in the future. It must, above all, believe in the capacity of its people so to learn from the past that they gain in judgment for the creation of the future," President Roosevelt has said. The existence of the Historical Records Survey indicates a belief on the part of the nation and of the state in these three things, for the purpose of this project is to survey, preserve and render accessible historical source materials of all kinds: Public records, private manuscripts, church records, and early American portraits. In addition to its regular work of preparing and publishing inventories, guides, calendars, check lists, and indexes, the Survey has a new and important task in the present period of crisis, endorsed by the Committee on the Conservation of Cultural Resources: To survey housing and storage facilities in restricted areas for emergency deposit of archives, manuscripts, records, and museum treasures, and to assist curators and custodians in preparing priority lists of such materials. Book excerpt: The beginning of the exciting history of Ashland was rooted in the development of farms and mills to utilize the waters of the Sudbury River. Ashland's fortunes grew as industries changed from small gristmill and sawmill operations to paper and cotton mills, boot and shoe factories. Because of Boston's thirst for drinking water, Ashland soon lost its rights to the Sudbury river. This put the town in decline until small industrial plants came in and with them, growth resumed. With the Warren Telechron Company, the town became the birthplace and home of electric timekeeping. It is still referred to as "Clocktown," and its sports teams are nicknamed "Clockers." Ashland follows this historical development with over two hundred vintage images, many of which have rarely been seen before. Through photographs beyond memory and others that many may recall, meet the people of this great town and see the buildings and events that make up this incredible story. Ashland takes the reader on a journey from the days of its early settlement, through its development into the village of Unionville and its incorporation into the town of Ashland, to its twentieth-century growth and revival.
