Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and History of the Primitive Methodist Church, Vol. 1 And the said several societies and classes, together with other congregations, societies, and classes, in several parts of England, were afterwards closely united and connected, and the whole thereof under the care of the said Hugh Bourne, James Bourne, William Clowes, and James Steele, were formed into one general community or Connexion, known and distinguished by the title or denomination of The Primitive Methodist Connexion.' Undoubtedly, then, William Clowes is right in his main contention, viz., that the Primitive Methodist Church began in 1811, and, therefore, that the proper history of the Church must also begin with that date. It is an anachronism to speak of Primitive Methodism before 1811. Any incidents which took place prior to the union effected in this memorable year, must be regarded as incidents and episodes belonging to a revivalistic movement, or series of revivalistic movements, locally differentiated, proceeding on early or primitive Methodist lines, partaking, therefore, of the nature of a survival, reaction, or return to an earlier type of aggressive agency, and finally converging and coalescing in one general community or Connexion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Primitive Methodist Church I count it an honour to write this brief foreword to this, the latest history of our Church. There must be few Primitive Methodists who are not acquainted with Mr. Kendall's smaller history published upwards of a quarter of a century ago, and with his "Principles and Polity of the Primitive Methodist Church." These little volumes, for many years, have been text-books for Local Preachers and for Ministerial Candidates. On one of my visits to the late Bishop of Durham I found these two books on the study table, and afterwards discovered that Dr. Westcott had read them with intentness and interest. The Standard History of our Church was written too by Mr. Kendall, and will immortalise his name. He was for nine years Connexional Editor, and in 1901 the President of Conference. The Book Committee felt that a smaller history was needed, bringing the story up to date. The present is practically a new volume. The historic imagination, the spiritual insight, the literary grace, which we all associate with the author, are all in evidence in these pages. The book has been written through love of the subject, with gratitude for the past, and with confidence for the future. The mention of Mr. Kendall brings his devoted and capable wife into mind. She it is who has been at his side during long years of physical weakness, and only her wonderful care has made possible the continuance and success of his literary labours. We greet them in this foreword, and commend the volume to all our people, and to the readers of other Churches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Hayloft to Temple: The Story of Primitive Methodism in Darmouth; Biographical, Reminiscent, Chronological, &C Churches have been formed, societies have been established, and houses for God erected, until now in almost every village a chapel lifts its form. "These Temples of His grace, In beauteous number stand, The honour of our native place, And bulwarks of our land." To know such men as the Revs. S. Atterby, John Smith, Thomas Swindell, Robert Eaglen, Robert Key, and Richard Howchin, was to venerate and love them. The next thing to knowing them personally is to read of their sayings and doings. The pioneers and foundation-layers of the Methodist Churches were men specially adapted for their work, and were greatly influenced by the Holy Spirit. These men could not only preach and pray, but organise. They had acquired the happy art of working, and at the same time of giving inspiration to others engaged in the work. It would be interesting to the present generation if a few of the old discourses could be produced that stirred the hearts and moved the finer feelings of our ancestors; but then it was their manner of expression that made their discourses powerful - the right-down earnestness and physical energy that accompanied the sermon that made it go. Dr. Jessopp in his "Arcady" most faithfully paints the scene. The deathblows that were given to sin and error! With the fist clenched and brought down upon the Bible-board, and the terrible stamp of the foot, and the occasional kick of the front panel of the pulpit, this gave force to the expression. All is tame now. The dramatic effects produced by these men of the past; ah! it is a lost art. Rhetoric has had to give place to logic; energy to intelligence! Some of these sermons the writer can remember - one of them in particular - which produced a most powerful effect upon the audience. The text was from the Apostle Paul, Romans viii.: "Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is Christ that died, yea, rather, is risen again." After describing the term "elect" and how it was applied to office, nation, and character, the preacher went on to urge the question "Who?" Will God the Father? No, it is He that justifies. Will the Son of God? No, it is He that died, yea, rather that is risen again; why this rather? viewed from a human standpoint, it was the resurrection of the Christ even more than the crucifixion that was of importance to mankind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Our Sunday Schools: A Brief, Centenary Narrative of the Origin, History, and Wonderful Progress, of the Sunday Schools of the Primitive Methodist Church Erhaps a brief word of preface may be necessary. The following pages contain the second Morse Lecture. The substance of it was delivered at the eighth Triennial Sunday School Conference on Saturday, October 8th, 1910, Central Church, Derby. The author is conscious that the little work carries with it the evidence of many defects. He would like his readers to judge him mercifully. The Lecture has been completed and passed through the press in the busy year of his Presidency. It should also be remembered that he has no predecessor in the line he has taken. The Lecture represents the first attempt of any sort to tell the story of our Sunday Schools, and the difficulty of gathering the material has been very great. The title given to the Lecture has been chosen, because it appears to be the truest and the best. One of our popular writers has said, in justifying the title of Romance to one of his books The incidents and Characters described are all romantic. With but little modification, the state ment may be adopted as descriptive of the story here told. The romance of the realities Of the religious world is um folded by our narrative. The author desires to express his grateful acknowledgments to a number of friends, and to the authorities of our Publishing House for their kindness in loaning to him old magazines and documents, to the General Sunday School Committee for access to its Minute Books and Records, and to his good colleagues, the Revs. A. Vickers and H. Smith, for their valuable service in helping to correct the proof-sheets. The author. Nottingham.
