Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Forty-Ninth New York Volunteers Temporary headquarters were established at James Adams and Company's store on Washington street, and Daniel Davidson Bidwell, a prominent military man of the city, was placed in charge of the affairs of the new organization. Active recruiting was at once commenced. About August 12th, under permission of the War Department, the grounds and buildings at Fort Porter were occupied as headquarters. Barracks and other buildings were erected, tents put up, and the long deserted and neglected place assumed a military aspect, visited by many citizens and friends of volunteers already there and by many men coming in and voluntarily offering their services. Nine companies were recruited, principally in the following counties: Companies A, G, I and K in Chautauqua county; Com panics B, D, E and F in Erie county, and Company H in Niagara county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Forty-Eighth Regiment: New York State Volunteers, in the War for the Union; 1861-1865 To My Comrades: The most gifted of modern women has written that, "If you would love a woman without ever looking back upon your love as a folly, she must die while you are courting her; and if you would maintain the slightest belief in human heroism, you must never make a pilgrimage to see the hero." I hope that in all your homes that double sarcasm is doubly contradicted. This book - which is the poor record of your heroic deeds - has been written chiefly that your children, who daily "see the hero," may know his history, and when they can no longer sec you. that they may still possess the story of your most glorious years. Three years ago, when 1 was requested to become the historian of the regiment, I consented conditionally that some one should be procured to write the historical sketch, while I would edit the book and see it through the press. For a while it seemed that we had succeeded in procuring the very services we needed from an officer who had been with the regiment through most of its career. But vexatious delays occurred, and finally, to our great disappointment, an entire miscarriage. Nothing remained but the abandonment of the enterprise - which all lamented - or my assuming the task. With great reluctance I therefore undertook it. I had but little time to give to it. and moreover I felt myself disqualified by the subordinate position I had held in the regiment to write its history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the One Hundred and Eighty-Ninth Regiment of New York Volunteers Only the outline history of a single regiment is here given. I have not attempted any account of the philosophical connection and design of the general movements in which my regiment participated, except such as was purely incidental. I have aimed to gratify their request to give them a souvenir of our experiences during our term of service. The plan that seemed best adapted to this, and to the expense and limits prescribed for the book, was to select and narrate such a suggestive series of events as would cluster, and thus by association revive all the memories of the year. It is hoped any member of the command will find each historical sentence a text from which he may entertain his children and grand-children with stories of his soldier-deeds and sufferings which otherwise might have fallen into oblivion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Ninth Regiment: N. Y. S. M N. G. S. N. Y. (Eighty-Third N. Y. Volunteers); 1845 1888 The Committee having in charge the Publication of the History of the Ninth Regiment, in order to prepare the work for the press, secured the services of William Todd, Esq., of Albany, N. Y., author of the History of the Seventy-ninth (Highlanders), N. Y. S. M., and N. Y. Vols., and of which regiment he was a member. Great care has been exercised in preparing the manuscript, and while there arc, doubtless, a few errors, an earnest endeavor has been made to give the ex-members, members of the regiment, and the public, the best and most authentic history possible to present for their consideration. The Committee are indebted for information and access to records, to the friends, members and ex-members of the regiment, to whom they extend hearty thanks.
