Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly one hundred seventy years, the Delaware and Raritan Canal has meandered across the narrow waist of New Jersey through bustling cities, suburban towns, and rural landscapes. One of the most successful towpath canals in the United States, the Delaware and Raritan carried more tonnage in 1866 than the famous Erie Canal. Transporting mainly anthracite coal, the Delaware and Raritan also stimulated industries as diverse as Roebling's wire-rope factory in Trenton, Johnson & Johnson pharmaceuticals in New Brunswick, and Fleischmann's Distillery in East Millstone. Today, as the centerpiece of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, the canal provides the people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and a premier recreational facility. The Delaware and Raritan Canal introduces you to this manmade waterway through some two hundred historical photographs and postcards. In these pages, discover the locks, aqueducts, and machinery that enabled the waterway to transport military men and supplies between New York and Philadelphia during three wars. See how inventor John Holland used the canal to deliver his Holland VI submarine to Washington for its naval trials and how luxury yachts, including J.P. Morgan's Tarantula, cruised the waterway. The Delaware and Raritan Canal documents a historical and recreational gem in the heart of New Jersey.

Book excerpt: Named for the Delaware Indians who lived in the area from about 1794 to 1820, this Indiana county was organized in 1827. It soon developed an economy based around agriculture, which remains important today. The area's first railroad, from Indianapolis to Bellefontaine, Ohio, came to Muncie in 1852. Indiana's first commercial gas well was drilled in Eaton, and many more wells were drilled in the area, which brought glass, metal, and other industries to the county, especially in towns such as Albany, Eaton, and Muncie. After the gas supply failed, automobile components--from gears to batteries--became a thriving industry. During World War II, Delaware County produced goods for the war effort ranging from land mines to submarine interiors. Ball canning jars were the area's most famous product until Jim Davis's Garfield (the cat) came along. In the 1950s and 1960s, Delaware County experienced growth and prosperity with the addition of machine and tool shops and small businesses.

Book excerpt: Dela-where? is a joke that all too often hits a nerve with residents of the second smallest state, but Dela-here is a great place to be--amid all the big cities of the Eastern Seaboard but just far enough from the beaten path to have its own unique identity. With a selection of fine historic images from her best-selling book, Historic Photos of Delaware, Ellen Rendle provides a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on the growth and development of Delaware in Remembering Delaware. This collection of photographs celebrates the First State's history with an eclectic mix of rural and urban, from the rolling hills and swift streams of New Castle County to the flat and rich agricultural lands of Kent and Sussex counties to the enduring beauty of the beach communities of the Atlantic Coast. Subjects range from horse-drawn farm machinery and black powder wagons to the celebratory openings of the Delaware Memorial and the Chesapeake Bay bridges. Years of growth and growing pains are buoyed with proud and happy moments at ship christenings, the Delmarva Chicken Festival, and cultural achievements. A tour of Remembering Delaware is sure to provide an illuminating and fond journey back into the state's rich history.
