Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Oranges to 1921, Reviewing the Rise, Development and Progress of an Influential Community, Vol. 3 Orange in 1920 has a population of all comfortably housed and enjoying blessings not dreamed of by the forebears of the pioneer period. So rapid have the various inventions and improvements come to us, lessening the tedium of the daily routine of home and business, that they have been appropriated as a matter of course. Sanitation has made wonderful changes in the general health of the city. Freedom from dis eases formerly appearing with seasonal regularity, such as chills and fever (malaria), typhus fever, small pox, etc., is one of the greatest blessings of the era. Evenly heated homes and office buildings in the winter months, now the rule, was a few generations ago a very rare exception. Truly we have come into the enjoyment of multitudinous blessings. We have been accustomed to the rapidly moving trolley car, the speeding automobile, the railroad train gliding along under its superb equipment, the handy telephone and various other devices evolved for our convenience. It is a goodly heritage and we are not insensible of the toil of the years which has brought it to us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An invaluable reference work of which only 750 copies were originally printed, providing a remarkably complete list of titles published during this most troubled period in Irish history, the period stretching from the passing of the Home Rule Bill in Britain's Parliament, through the raising of rival Unionist and Nationalist volunteer militias in northern and southern Ireland, the Great War, the Easter Rising, and the guerilla war against British forces which led to Irish independence. An incredibly useful book, providing a jumping-off board for anyone wanting to research the political and military history of the era. Publications are listed alphabetically by brief chronological period.

Book excerpt: When Sister Emma and the five women who accompanied her from England crossed the Orange River early in 1874, they exchanged the comfortable mainstream of Anglican Church life for the rigours of pioneering new works in an undeveloped country. Living conditions were primitive, travel was hard, and money was always in short supply. The newly-formed Community of St Michael and All Angels opened the first girls’ schools north of the Orange and the first hospital in the Free State. At Kimberley, Sister Henrietta achieved a world first through her successful campaign for the State Registration of nurses. Four Sisters were besieged in Kimberley during the Anglo-Boer War, and in Bloemfontein their Mother House became a military hospital. By faith and determination the Community recovered. St Michael’s School was raised to new standards of excellence, while the Sisters expanded their mission to include Lesotho and the eastern Free State. Decades of work with Bloemfontein’s sick and deprived led to Sister Enid becoming known as Ma Mohau (Mother of Mercy), and to national acclaim in the 1970s as South Africa’s Mother Teresa. This book studies the development of the Community’s religious life, and charts the progress of their work among all races from their foundation until the death of the last Sister in 2016. Across the Orange, their relative isolation from the strong centres of Anglicanism eventually contributed to their demise, but not before they had established an enduring legacy. The work they began in Lesotho is continued by the Community of the Holy Name, while St Michael’s School in Bloemfontein is recognised as one of the finest girls’ schools in South Africa.
