Book excerpt: Advances in Botanical Research publishes in-depth and up-to-date reviews on a wide range of topics in plant sciences. The series features several reviews by recognized experts on all aspects of plant genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, and ecology. Volume 78 focuses on the Genomes and Evolution of Charophytes, Bryophytes, Lycophytes, and Ferns. Sequencing of genomes of ‘lower’ animals such as sponges or hydrozoans has much informed our understanding of how metazoans evolved. On the plant side of things, sequencing and comparison of a moss and lycophyte genome with those of green algae and flowering plants has greatly informed our understanding of plant evolution. However, it has also become clear that we need to look into genomes of the closest algal relatives to land plants, the charophytes, and into further genomes of bryophytes, lycophytes, and ferns to unravel how land plants evolved. Features reviews by recognized experts on all aspects of plant genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, and ecology Focuses on the genomes and evolution of charophytes, bryophytes, lycophytes, and ferns Offers a first time compilation on non-flowering plant genomes Helps unravel how land plants evolved

Book excerpt: This book represents the first multidisciplinary scientific work on a deep volcanic maar lake in comparison with other similar temperate lakes. The syntheses of the main characteristics of Lake Pavin are, for the first time, set in a firmer footing comparative approach, encompassing regional, national, European and international aquatic science contexts. It is a unique lake because of its permanently anoxic monimolimnion, and furthermore, because of its small surface area, its substantially low human influence, and by the fact that it does not have a river inflow. The book reflects the scientific research done on the general limnology, history, origin, volcanology and geological environment as well as on the geochemistry and biogeochemical cycles. Other chapters focus on the biology and microbial ecology whereas the sedimentology and paleolimnology are also given attention. This volume will be of special interest to researchers and advanced students, primarily in the fields of limnology, biogeochemistry, and aquatic ecology.

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. By 2050, human population is expected to reach 9.7 billion. The demand for increased food production needs to be met from ever reducing resources of land, water and other environmental constraints. Rice remains the staple food source for a majority of the global populations, but especially in Asia where ninety percent of rice is grown and consumed. Climate change continues to impose abiotic and biotic stresses that curtail rice quality and yields. Researchers have been challenged to provide innovative solutions to maintain, or even increase, rice production. Amongst them, the ‘green super rice’ breeding strategy has been successful for leading the development and release of multiple abiotic and biotic stress tolerant rice varieties. Recent advances in plant molecular biology and biotechnologies have led to the identification of stress responsive genes and signaling pathways, which open up new paradigms to augment rice productivity. Accordingly, transcription factors, protein kinases and enzymes for generating protective metabolites and proteins all contribute to an intricate network of events that guard and maintain cellular integrity. In addition, various quantitative trait loci associated with elevated stress tolerance have been cloned, resulting in the detection of novel genes for biotic and abiotic stress resistance. Mechanistic understanding of the genetic basis of traits, such as N and P use, is allowing rice researchers to engineer nutrient-efficient rice varieties, which would result in higher yields with lower inputs. Likewise, the research in micronutrients biosynthesis opens doors to genetic engineering of metabolic pathways to enhance micronutrients production. With third generation sequencing techniques on the horizon, exciting progress can be expected to vastly improve molecular markers for gene-trait associations forecast with increasing accuracy. This book emphasizes on the areas of rice science that attempt to overcome the foremost limitations in rice production. Our intention is to highlight research advances in the fields of physiology, molecular breeding and genetics, with a special focus on increasing productivity, improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and nutritional quality of rice.

Book excerpt: The incidence of diabetes is increasing both in the western world and in developing countries; type 2 diabetes increase is partly the result of greater obesity. Diabetes can cause two major problems to the foot – diabetic neuropathy resulting in nerve damage and peripheral vascular disease reducing the flow of blood. These can result in ulceration of the foot which needs careful management to avoid the possibility of amputation. This management is best undertaken by multidisciplinary teams using the latest evidence to support their practice. This book presents a comprehensive and authoritative coverage of the latest evidence-based investigations, techniques and management of the diabetic foot. Evidenced-based management of the diabetic foot International, multidisciplinary team of editors and contributors Comprehensive reference for all health professionals involved in the care of diabetic foot problems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its focus on narrow band imaging, this book is an excellent reference for new as well as experienced practitioners in the field of endoscopy. Narrow band imaging has brought about a revolutionary improvement in diagnostic endoscopy, enabling objective diagnosis and precise detection of lesions. It has enhanced the capability of endoscopy to facilitate qualitative diagnoses for the great benefit of patients who undergo endoscopic examinations. However, a standardized system of classification has not yet been established and many clinicians and researchers are not yet highly skilled in utilizing the technique or interpreting the images that are produced. This atlas addresses those issues, providing clear, simple and easy-to-understand descriptions illustrated with generous use of endoscopic images.
