Book excerpt: Control and Dynamic Systems: Advances in Theory and Applications, Volume 46: Manufacturing and Automation Systems: Techniques and Technologies, Part 2 of 5 covers the significant advances and issues on the utilization of techniques and technologies in the manufacturing industries. This volume is divided into nine chapters and starts with the essential issue of software in manufacturing systems, particularly the aspects of the control software that are active in the time-critical or real time portions of the machine's operation. The succeeding chapters deal with the interactions between material-handling systems and other components of manufacturing systems; the principles of flexible manufacturing systems; the various views on the contributions of mechatronics; and the techniques for machine layout optimization in manufacturing and automation systems. These topics are followed by discussions of the application of a real-time control system to address issues of safety, productivity advances, and production cost reductions. Other chapters consider the influence of human supervisory control of predominantly automated manufacturing processes and the techniques for the manufacturing systems integration. The final chapter examines the major importance of the assembly line balancing to manufacturing systems. This book is of great value to process and mechanical engineers, as well as process control workers and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturers worldwide are faced with unprecedented challenges from international competition, changing production processes and technologies, shorter production life-cycles, market globalization and environmental requirements. Fundamental to meeting these challenges is the understanding and control of information across all stages of the Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) process. Modern Manufacturing presents the state of the art in the information-oriented aspects of CIM and Intelligent Manufacturing Systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the impact of new software engineering technologies, the object-oriented approach, database design, hierarchical control and intelligent systems. The contributions are written by experts from Europe and the USA.

Book excerpt: One of the most important methods in dealing with the optimization of large, complex systems is that of hierarchical decomposition. The idea is to reduce the overall complex problem into manageable approximate problems or subproblems, to solve these problems, and to construct a solution of the original problem from the solutions of these simpler prob lems. Development of such approaches for large complex systems has been identified as a particularly fruitful area by the Committee on the Next Decade in Operations Research (1988) [42] as well as by the Panel on Future Directions in Control Theory (1988) [65]. Most manufacturing firms are complex systems characterized by sev eral decision subsystems, such as finance, personnel, marketing, and op erations. They may have several plants and warehouses and a wide variety of machines and equipment devoted to producing a large number of different products. Moreover, they are subject to deterministic as well as stochastic discrete events, such as purchasing new equipment, hiring and layoff of personnel, and machine setups, failures, and repairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The need for changing the control objective during the process has been reported in many systems in manufacturing, robotics, etc. However, not many works have been devoted to systematically investigating the proper strategies for these types of problems. In this dissertation, two approaches to such problems have been suggested for fast varying systems. The first approach, addresses problems where some of the objectives are statically related to the states of the systems. Hierarchical Optimal Control was proposed to simplify the nonlinearity caused by adding the statically related objectives into control problem. The proposed method was implemented for contour-position control of motion systems as well as force-position control of end milling processes. It was shown for a motion control system, when contour tracking is important, the controller can reduce the contour error even when the axial control signals are saturating. Also, for end milling processes it was shown that during machining sharp edges where, excessive cutting forces can cause tool breakage, by using the proposed controller, force can be bounded without sacrificing the position tracking performance. The second approach that was proposed (Hierarchical Model Predictive Control), addressed the problems where all the objectives are dynamically related. In this method neural network approximation methods were used to convert a nonlinear optimization problem into an explicit form which is feasible for real time implementation. This method was implemented for force-velocity control of ram based freeform extrusion fabrication of ceramics. Excellent extrusion results were achieved with the proposed method showing excellent performance for different changes in control objective during the process"--Abstract, page iv.
