Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat Transport in Micro- and Nanoscale Thin Films presents aspects and applications of the principle methods of heat transport in relation to nanoscale films. Small-scale parts and thin films are widely used in the electronics industry. However, the drastic change in the thermal conductivity with reducing device size and film thickness modifies the energy transport by heat-carrying phonons in the film. Energy transfer in small-sized devices and thin films deviate from the classical diffusion to radiative transport. This book deals with micro/nano scale heat transfer in small scale devices and the thin films, including interface properties of cross-plane transport. The book fills the gap between applications of the physical fundamentals and energy transport at the micro- and nano scale, which will be valuable for academics, researchers and students in the fields of materials science and energy transport. Offers a specialist focus on nanoscale thin films, allowing the reader to create more efficient heat transfer systems Includes in-depth coverage of the formulation of transient energy transport for short durations of heating, which is valuable those working in electronics Focuses on applications and real-life case studies to clearly illustrate how the theories explained in the book can be used in industry

Book excerpt: Micro and Nano Thermal Transport Research: Characterization, Measurement and Mechanism is a complete and reliable reference on thermal measurement methods and mechanisms of micro and nanoscale materials. The book has a strong focus on applications and simulation, providing clear guidance on how to measure thermal properties in a systematic way. Sections cover the fundamentals of thermal properties before introducing tools to help readers identify and analyze thermal characteristics of these materials. The thermal transport properties are then further explored by means of simulation which reflect the internal mechanisms used to generate such thermal properties. Readers will gain a clear understanding of thermophysical measurement methods and the representative thermal transport characteristics of micro/nanoscale materials with different structures and are guided through a decision-making process to choose the most effective method to master thermal analysis. The book is particularly suitable for those engaged in the design and development of thermal property measurement instruments, as well as researchers of thermal transport at the micro and nanoscale. Includes a variety of measurement methods and thermal transport characteristics of micro and nanoscale materials under different structures Guides the reader through the decision-making process to ensure the best thermal analysis method is selected for their setting Contains experiments and simulations throughout that help apply understanding to practice

Book excerpt: This book covers the new technologies on micro/nanoscale thermal characterization developed in the Micro/Nanoscale Thermal Science Laboratory led by Dr. Xinwei Wang. Five new non-contact and non-destructive technologies are introduced: optical heating and electrical sensing technique, transient electro-thermal technique, transient photo-electro-thermal technique, pulsed laser-assisted thermal relaxation technique, and steady-state electro-Raman-thermal technique. These techniques feature significantly improved ease of implementation, super signal-to-noise ratio, and have the capacity of measuring the thermal conductivity/diffusivity of various one-dimensional structures from dielectric, semiconductive, to metallic materials.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer mechanism from hot solids to surrounding air is crucial in thermal systems. Thermal management of devices at micro/nano length scales is very important for their reliability as they continue to shrink in size. It is agreed widely that the heat transfer coefficient increases at smaller length scales. This work presents an experimental technique to characterize the heat transfer from micro and nano scale structures using infrared microscopy. The heat transfer coefficient is found to be two orders of magnitude higher than the value at bulk length scales. It also shows an inverse relationship with temperature of the solid which suggests that the solid to air conduction is the dominating mechanism of heat dissipation at small length scales. An empirical relationship is also presented that depends on ratio of surface area to cross-sectional area, temperature differential in the heated solid and its surroundings. The heat transfer coefficient in conjunction with the temperature map from the infrared microscope can be used to measure the thermal conductivity of specimen using a heat transfer model based on micro fin geometry. It is assumed that this size effect on the heat transfer coefficient is due to the size of specimen. An experiment is presented to show the effect of the predominance of the heater size on the heat transfer coefficient. For micro-heaters, the heat transfer coefficient is measured to about 3200 W/m2 K. This value drops to about 110 W/m2 K for a millimeter scale heater and to 10 W/m2 K for a macroscopic heater; all for a nanoscale thin film specimen.
