It was papered very prettily, with a gay paper of brilliant roses and butterflies, which at once gave it a cheerful and comfortable appearance. Agnes had hung up all the spare pictures she could muster, and robbed her own room of several little ornaments in order to beautify Aunt Selby's mantel-shelf. The French bed in the corner looked most inviting, with its spotless dimity-curtains and snowy counterpane. The window-curtains were of the same material as the bed-curtains, but Agnes had bought some blue glazed lining, and had edged them neatly with it, whilst a deep blue fringe, the remnant of some handsome curtains at Hazel Farm, was nailed across at the top, so as to form a valance, and really looked very bright and pretty. The blue border to the bed and window-curtains took away from the cold look of the pure white dimity, and at once gave the room a furnished appearance. Not that the room wanted furniture, it was more an inhabited look that it lacked. There was a handsome mahogany press, a wash-stand, a chest of drawers, a table, and a few of the Hazel Farm dining-room chairs, all of mahogany. Everything was substantial and handsome. The carpet was a dark blue drugget, and suited the rest of the furniture. It was, altogether, a room not to be ashamed of, and Agnes, who had arranged it all, did feel as if her trouble was well repaid now. "What do you think?--will Aunt Selby be comfortable?" she asked eagerly. "'Tis as good as the dear old farm--why upon my word 'tis as good as the dear old farm!" exclaimed Mrs. Lawson, perfectly surprised out of herself; "'tis magic, and nothing else."
