Book excerpt: This wildly unorthodox book mixes original Spoonerism couplets with explanatory or crazy comments or stories, aimed at entertaining both wordplay nuts and ordinary mortals. Like Anil’s last four books (self-published but all Award Winners) it is an exercise in the use of constrained writing, with themes dictated by the spooner constraints. More than a gimmick, the constraints generate silly, amusing or unusual situations that he lacks the imagination to create de novo. The result is crazy fun. Yet it’s scholarly, seen in the big Spoonerism Dictionary at the end. Examples: synonyms: Achilles heel = hock-kill-ease ail. Here and now = Near? And how! antonyms: Bury the hatchet. ≠ Hurry the bad shit. Harmony ≠ Mar honey. essays: Free society—so see variety. Meet your Maker... Mate, you’re meeker! Money numby. Anil is a preacher turned biologist turned writer of wordplay. Born in Henderson, Kentucky, he was valedictorian and senior class president. He was further educated at Wake Forest (BS) and Johns Hopkins (PhD), with positions at U. Illinois, U. Pittsburgh, and U. Western Australia. Now a dual citizen of the USA and Australia, he lives in Perth. He has published five previous books of wordplay humour, with two others in press. He published over two hundred articles in the now defunct Word Ways and will continue contributing to its replacement, Journal of Wordplay, once it’s up and running. His major influences were a humour loving mother and authors Walt Kelly (Pogo), Lewis Carroll, Will Cuppy and Dave Morice.

Book excerpt: Too much exercise can kill you. The Haywire Heart is the first book to examine heart conditions in athletes. Intended for anyone who competes in endurance sports like cycling, triathlon, running races of all distances, and cross-country skiing, The Haywire Heart presents the evidence that going too hard or too long can damage your heart forever. You’ll find what to watch out for, what to do about it, and how to protect your heart so you can enjoy the sports you love for years to come. The Haywire Heart shares the developing research into a group of conditions known as “athlete’s heart”, starting with a wide-ranging look at the warning signs, symptoms, and how to recognize your potential risk. Leading cardiac electrophysiologist and masters athlete Dr. John Mandrola explores the prevention and treatment of heart conditions in athletes like arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation and flutter, tachycardia, hypertrophy, and coronary artery disease. He reviews new research about exercise intensity and duration, recovery, inflammation and calcification, and the ways athletes inflict lasting harm. These heart problems are appearing with alarming frequency among masters athletes who are pushing their bodies harder than ever in the hope that exercise will keep them healthy and strong into their senior years. The book is complete with gripping case studies of elite and age-group athletes from journalist Chris Caselike the scary condition that nearly killed cyclist and coauthor Lennard Zinnand includes a frank discussion of exercise addiction and the mental habits that prevent athletes from seeking medical help when they need it. Dr. Mandrola explains why many doctors misdiagnose heart conditions in athletes and offers an invaluable guide on how to talk with your doctor about your condition and its proven treatments. He covers known heart irritants, training and rest modifications, effective medicines, and safe supplements that can reduce the likelihood of heart damage from exercise. Heart conditions affect hardcore athletes as well as those who take up sports seeking better health and weight loss. The Haywire Heart is a groundbreaking and critically important guide to heart care for athletes. By protecting your heart now and watching for the warning signs, you can avoid crippling heart conditions and continue to exercise and compete for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picture a master sculptor meticulously wielding his chisel, gradually unveiling a breathtaking sculpture of Lord Krishna from a solid marble block. As spectators stand in awe of its beauty, they eagerly inquire about the sculptor's secret to crafting such a masterpiece. His humble response resonates deeply: "Krishna was already in the marble block. I simply chipped away what wasn't Krishna." In essence, this embodies the journey of self-transformation. We are inherently complete, possessing all the necessary skills to lead a fulfilling life. Yet, obstacles and barriers may hinder the full expression of our potential. My Master, Sri Sathya Sai Baba says, “An Integrated Personality is a harmonious synthesis of a Sharp Brain, a Kind Heart & Competent Hands. He/She is a beautiful combination of Nobility and Ability”. You are already that…Right Now. As a coach, my role is to serve as a gentle guide, reminding and assisting you in reclaiming what is rightfully yours. Throughout this journey, I intend to gently remind you of what you already know. While I may offer perspectives or insights based on my experiences, there is no absolute truth in what I convey. Feel empowered to discern what resonates with you, retaining what serves you best and releasing what doesn't. However, I have a humble request: "Please don't blindly agree or disagree with me. Instead, explore and test these ideas alongside me." Approach it like trying on a new coat—step into the trial room of your life and see how these concepts fit. In the pages ahead, we'll explore various tools and techniques, each with its purpose and relevance.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The single most important explanation, and the fullest explanation, of how Donald Trump became president of the United States . . . nothing less than the most important book that I have read this year.”—Lawrence O’Donnell How did we get here? In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen shows that what’s happening in our country today—this post-factual, “fake news” moment we’re all living through—is not something new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character. America was founded by wishful dreamers, magical thinkers, and true believers, by hucksters and their suckers. Fantasy is deeply embedded in our DNA. Over the course of five centuries—from the Salem witch trials to Scientology to the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, from P. T. Barnum to Hollywood and the anything-goes, wild-and-crazy sixties, from conspiracy theories to our fetish for guns and obsession with extraterrestrials—our love of the fantastic has made America exceptional in a way that we've never fully acknowledged. From the start, our ultra-individualism was attached to epic dreams and epic fantasies—every citizen was free to believe absolutely anything, or to pretend to be absolutely anybody. With the gleeful erudition and tell-it-like-it-is ferocity of a Christopher Hitchens, Andersen explores whether the great American experiment in liberty has gone off the rails. Fantasyland could not appear at a more perfect moment. If you want to understand Donald Trump and the culture of twenty-first-century America, if you want to know how the lines between reality and illusion have become dangerously blurred, you must read this book. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE “This is a blockbuster of a book. Take a deep breath and dive in.”—Tom Brokaw “[An] absorbing, must-read polemic . . . a provocative new study of America’s cultural history.”—Newsday “Compelling and totally unnerving.”—The Village Voice “A frighteningly convincing and sometimes uproarious picture of a country in steep, perhaps terminal decline that would have the founding fathers weeping into their beards.”—The Guardian “This is an important book—the indispensable book—for understanding America in the age of Trump.”—Walter Isaacson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci

Book excerpt: The New Art Right: A New Reaction for 2018, takes us back to a time before the woeful dominion of contemporary politics - a time when art served as the impetus to drive political forces, not the vulgarity of the masses nor banal populism. It also points toward possible futures, such as transhumanism, and higher forms of humanity. The New Art Right is not just a second edition of The New Reaction, it is the culmination and the final refinement of Haywire's thought. The New Art Right sets itself squarely against the vulgarity of modern America, a place where both the Right and Left have devolved to into a state of perpetual squables and a race to the bottom. Haywire savages the bourgeois Left and the Right with equal disdain, often in the form of satire and sardonic wit. The New Art Right, however, does not take us into the 'safe' realms of art. Instead, it leads one on a dark journey, through the underworld towards the enlightenment of Dark Bohemia. Along the wayside, Haywire attacks both the intellectual inadequacies of the feminist Left and the patriarchal Right, leaving no 'safe spaces' left behind. Haywire does not draw her philosophy from within the isolation of the ivory towers of academia, her wisdom is one of the real world, and she takes inspiration from her vast experiences in music, art, and American counter-culture. Rachel Haywire is also the author of Acidexia.
