Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank's research is intended to address critical issues and problems facing member governments in developing and transition economies. How can the governments of the poorest countries generate enough revenue to provide the education and health services essential to reducing poverty and promoting growth and development? How can poor countries attract investors to build the infrastructure their economies need? How can they develop systems to bring clean water to the 2 billion people without it today? How can they train teachers and bring to class the 115 million children who have not yet received any education? And how can rich countries be persuaded to lower market barriers, helping to reverse the decline in export prices for poor countries that has left them earning less from trade today than in the 1970s? These are the types of questions that are addressed in this edition of 'The World Bank Research Program: Abstracts from Current Studies'. This volume reports on research projects initiated, under way, or completed from July 2003 through June 2004. It covers 151 research projects on several broad development related issues, including agriculture, health, education, environment, infrastructure, investment climate, and more. The abstract for each project describes the questions addressed, the analytic methods used, the findings to date, and policy implications.

Book excerpt: The critical challenge of financing development and sustainability is a key focus for the world's international financial institutions, led by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and, above all, the G8. This volume assesses the current practice and perspectives of the major developed world countries that dominate the boards of the IMF and the World Bank and comprise the G8. It looks at the prospects for meeting the Millennium Development Goals in the most impoverished region of Africa, the way trade and finance instruments can help, and how the challenges of energy security and climate change control will affect the results. This volume offers in-depth analysis of: * how the Millennium Development Goals are to be met * North-to-South resource transfers * the challenges of controlling climate control beyond Kyoto In sum, this volume provides a critical and creative examination of what the G8 governments, especially at and after the 2005 Gleneagles summit, have done and what they should do to promote development and sustainability.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report finds that although migration is not a panacea for development problems, if properly managed it can deliver major economic gains in terms of poverty reduction. It shows how governments and others could, by shaping the nature of migration and the distribution of its costs and benefits, make migration work for the poor. It highlights five myths which surround the subject, including the fear that there is a 'tidal wave of migrants about to crash on our shores', and that it is the poorest, most desperate people who migrate. The Committee's report argues that effective policies implemented at each stage of the migration journey, by the UK and other developed countries, in developing countries and at a multilateral level, can make migration work for poverty reduction. This includes the need to regulate recruitment policies in rich countries to reduce problems of 'brain-drain' from poorer countries; tackling human trafficking and illegal migration; better managed migration; and promotion of resource flows, including remittances, created by migration. Ultimately, managing migration for poverty reduction is beyond any single nation state, and requires effective partnerships bilaterally and at the multinational level.
