Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to give a rigorous and complete treatment of various topics from harmonic analysis with a strong emphasis on symplectic invariance properties, which are often ignored or underestimated in the time-frequency literature. The topics that are addressed include (but are not limited to) the theory of the Wigner transform, the uncertainty principle (from the point of view of symplectic topology), Weyl calculus and its symplectic covariance, Shubin’s global theory of pseudo-differential operators, and Feichtinger’s theory of modulation spaces. Several applications to time-frequency analysis and quantum mechanics are given, many of them concurrent with ongoing research. For instance, a non-standard pseudo-differential calculus on phase space where the main role is played by “Bopp operators” (also called “Landau operators” in the literature) is introduced and studied. This calculus is closely related to both the Landau problem and to the deformation quantization theory of Flato and Sternheimer, of which it gives a simple pseudo-differential formulation where Feichtinger’s modulation spaces are key actors. This book is primarily directed towards students or researchers in harmonic analysis (in the broad sense) and towards mathematical physicists working in quantum mechanics. It can also be read with profit by researchers in time-frequency analysis, providing a valuable complement to the existing literature on the topic. A certain familiarity with Fourier analysis (in the broad sense) and introductory functional analysis (e.g. the elementary theory of distributions) is assumed. Otherwise, the book is largely self-contained and includes an extensive list of references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of lecture notes from the minicourses in the December 2018 Langlands Workshop: Endoscopy and Beyond. The volume combines seven introductory chapters on trace formulas, local Arthur packets, and beyond endoscopy. It aims to introduce the endoscopy classification via a basic example of the trace formula for SL(2), explore the more refined questions on the structure of Arthur packets, and look beyond endoscopy following the suggestions of Langlands, Braverman-Kazhdan, Ngo, and Altuğ. The book is a helpful reference for undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume explores the connection between the theoretical aspects of harmonic analysis and the construction of advanced multiscale representations that have emerged in signal and image processing. It highlights some of the most promising mathematical developments in harmonic analysis in the last decade brought about by the interplay among different areas of abstract and applied mathematics. This intertwining of ideas is considered starting from the theory of unitary group representations and leading to the construction of very efficient schemes for the analysis of multidimensional data. After an introductory chapter surveying the scientific significance of classical and more advanced multiscale methods, chapters cover such topics as An overview of Lie theory focused on common applications in signal analysis, including the wavelet representation of the affine group, the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg group, and the metaplectic representation of the symplectic group An introduction to coorbit theory and how it can be combined with the shearlet transform to establish shearlet coorbit spaces Microlocal properties of the shearlet transform and its ability to provide a precise geometric characterization of edges and interface boundaries in images and other multidimensional data Mathematical techniques to construct optimal data representations for a number of signal types, with a focus on the optimal approximation of functions governed by anisotropic singularities. A unified notation is used across all of the chapters to ensure consistency of the mathematical material presented. Harmonic and Applied Analysis: From Groups to Signals is aimed at graduate students and researchers in the areas of harmonic analysis and applied mathematics, as well as at other applied scientists interested in representations of multidimensional data. It can also be used as a textbook for graduate courses in applied harmonic analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conference on Harmonic Analysis on Reductive Groups was held at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine from July 31 to August 11, 1989. The stated goal of the conference was to explore recent advances in harmonic analysis on both real and p-adic groups. It was the first conference since the AMS Summer Sym posium on Harmonic Analysis on Homogeneous Spaces, held at Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1972, to cover local harmonic analysis on reductive groups in such detail and to such an extent. While the Williamstown conference was longer (three weeks) and somewhat broader (nilpotent groups, solvable groups, as well as semisimple and reductive groups), the structure and timeliness of the two meetings was remarkably similar. The program of the Bowdoin Conference consisted of two parts. First, there were six major lecture series, each consisting of several talks addressing those topics in harmonic analysis on real and p-adic groups which were the focus of intensive research during the previous decade. These lectures began at an introductory level and advanced to the current state of research. Sec ond, there was a series of single lectures in which the speakers presented an overview of their latest research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes give an account of recent work in harmonic analysis dealing with the analytical foundations of A. Weil's theory of metaplectic groups. It is shown that Weil's main theorem holds for a class of functions (a certain Segal algebra) larger than that of the Schwartz-Bruhat functions considered by Weil. The theorem is derived here from some general results about this class which seems to be a rather natural one in the context of Weil's theory. No previous knowledge of the latter is assumed, however, and the theory is developed here, step by step; Further, a complete discussion of the Segal algebra concerned is given, with references to the literature. Weil's metaplectic groups are somewhat easier to investigate when the characteristic is not 2; the case of characteristic 2 presents some special features which are fully discussed. New problems that arise are indicated.
