And others: nevertheless I am bold to say that in no work on engraving in wood have 1 yet found any signs of choice or sufficient judgment. Good cuts and bad have been confounded together: and exact reproductions made from foul impressions, the ink over the sides of the lines too often supposed to be a portion of the engraving. Book excerpt: Excerpt from J. J. Lankes: Painter-Graver on Wood I first came upon these engravings quite by accident, and was immediately enamoured of them. Perhaps it were more accurate to say, enamoured of the view of wood-engraving their maker holds, though I doubt whether he has ever troubled himself to formulate a conscious point of view. Yet the point of view is there: if it were not, the engravings would not be there. A refreshing thing about these prints is their freedom from the atmosphere of the studios, with its endless suggestions of other men's art. He seems to see without the familiar results of steepage in art atmospheres, and his message is, therefore, not an echo but an original thing born of the contact between the external world and his own fresh mind. A wood-engraving of a linear drawing is done in one of two ways: the block, which before it is engraved at all prints black, may be so cut that the resulting design is a pattern of dark on a ground of light. This is negative engraving, because the incision of the tool simply removes parts of the dark pattern, thus adding the area removed to the negative ground against which the pattern is seen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A High School Course in Wood Pattern Making This book is the outgrowth of seven years of teaching experience in both Trade and High Schools. The author submits the book on the ground that we can all benefit by the experience of others. Work on Pattern Making are not as numerous as the importance of the subject warrants. The various articles in this book follow each other in what seems, to the author to be the natural sequence. To begin the subject the teacher lectures on The Metal Trades (Chapters I and II), and the manufacture of iron products, so that the pupil can learn exactly what part pattern making plays in the commercial world. Then the wood working exercise in Chapter III should be started. Before beginning it, however the pupils, as a class, should be made to remove the plane bit and sharpen it and learn to replace it correctly. Pupils dislike to take a plane apart until the teacher proves to them that it is a simple operation. While the pupil is working on the exercise, certain periods should be devoted to lectures and recitations on Moulding and Pattern Making, Chapters IV and V, so that these chapters are covered by the time the exercise is finished. Then the student will understand and can begin making the simple patterns in Chapter VI. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engravings on Wood Artists, too, manifested only a limited interest in drawing on the block. The obliteration of their work by the process of engraving it was alone an insurmountable barrier to progress in black and white drawing. The introduction of photography upon wood made it practicable to transfer to the block a drawing in black and white, a water color, or an oil painting. The result was that the reproduction of works of a very much higher class was begun, and a much greater degree of intimacy was established between the work of the engraver and the work of the artist. Nothing could be more natural than that in these circumstances the engravers should rapidly invade new fields and carry their artistic sympathies and instincts to the point of themselves becoming artists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of Wood Engraving: With Practical Instruction in the Art for Persons Wishing to Learn Without an Instructor In its preparation great pains have been taken both by explanation and illustration to make the subject clear and comprehensive, and to give directions for the practice Of the art so that a be ginner may be enabled to learn the first principles. It is not reasonable to suppose that a book of this kind, however full and complete, will take the place of a good teacher, but if for any reason a person desires to make a beginning without a master, he will be enabled to do so by heeding its directions.
