Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Irish Teaching: Founded on the Discoveries of M. Gouin, With a Set of Gouin Series and a Vocabulary The preparation of this Handbook of teaching was begun under a feeling that such a work was much wanted, and without reference to Oireachtas require ments. That the book secured a prize at the Oireachtas was chiefly valuable as a means of getting it published and circulated. The aim of the work is not wide. Being merely to supply a method of class teaching. Many questions of pedagogic value and interest, such as the frequency of classes, their proper organisation, the qualifications of teachers, etc., are not touched upon. These questions are left to practical teachers. The work that Gaelic Leaguers have set themselves is a gigantic one, being no less than to teach a new language to a whole nation. That we shall succeed there can be, now, no question. Even with the very faulty methods of teaching that have hitherto prevailed, numerous Irish speakers and writers have been made. The need, however, for improved methods becomes every day more claimant; we cannot afford to neglect any improvement that tends to lighten our work. This little handbook is a first step on the road of improvement, and will likely be followed by many others. We will hail with joy every advance made, whether on the lines here suggested or on any other lines. The writer has to apologise for the frequent use in the following pages of the pronoun I. It is used for the sake of clearness in expounding the method of teaching, and also to mark his responsibility for certain developments of the Gouin method not found elsewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Studies in Modern Irish: A Handbook for Teachers and Beginners While the lessons in this book are primarily intended to help the Teacher who is struggling with the difficulties of the Direct Method, they can at the same time be used by private students. For the benefit of the latter a Vocabulary and a Key to the Exercises have been provided, but the Notes on Method and Grammar are meant chie y for teachers. From over twenty years' experience of teachers and teaching, I have come to the conclusion that some such assistance is needed. The Direct Method has its limitations, and I am convinced that without translation from English into Irish, it cannot impart that precision and accuracy which are essential for a true education. On the other hand, such translation - when judiciously handled - ih no way interferes with progress in the Direct Method. On the contrary, I have found the practice a most useful and interesting variation in the ordinary class routine. It need hardly be added that scientific and regular drill in Phonetics should precede, or at least go on concomitantly with, these lessons. The idea of allowing pupils to form their own phonetic "systems" can lead only to confusion and the corruption of the spoken language.
