Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit-Growers Guide-Book This little book has been prepared as a means of assisting many persons who have answered the call "back to the land," and who are undertaking the growing of fruit on a commercial scale. It is not intended as an exhaustive treatise on fruit growing, as such is manifestly impossible within the size of such a book. Neither is it expected to tell all that is to be told about fruit growing. Its purpose is to serve for the guidance of the beginner and as a handy reference manual for the busy orchardist. The foundation upon which this little book is based is the many letters which reach the office of The Fruit-Grower, containing inquiries about many phases of fruit-growing. These inquiries come from all parts of the United States and from Canada, and cover almost every phase of horticultural work, although in preparing this book only the general problem of growing the ordinary deciduous orchard fruits has been considered. This problem has been considered in a very general way without specific directions for any particular fruit. Where details for a given fruit have been needed, the treatment of the subject has been boiled down to as concise a form as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit Grower's Hand Book: A Concise Manual of Directions for the Selection and Culture of the Best Hardy Fruits in the Garden or Orchard Violations of Nature's design, are seen in the tears of the child, gloating over fruits which it may not touch, or sickening with green or half ripe substitutes; in the crime and shame of yielding to a strong temptation, - the golden burthen of a neighbor's tree; \and in unnatural and pernicious thirst for fermented drinks, an appetite scarcely formed by those who enjoy a constant supply of fresh juicy fruits throughout the year. When Doctor Dwight first removed to New Haven, but little fruit was raised there. He urged his neighbors to plant trees, but they said it was of no use, for the boys would steal all the fruit.(53) Plant more, was his answer, make good fruit plenty. Fifteen years afterwards, he pointed to the abundance of fruit, and the ah sence of pillage then enjoyed, in proof of his principle. His mem ory is green. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Fruit Growers Guide Catalogue, 1899 Good soil tillage at the proper time, sufficient fertilizer of the right sort, proper preparation of the soil before planting, are essentials to the best te sults in growing trees. This properly applies to both nursery or orchard. We have a peculiar way of preparing soil before planting it to trees. Some thing original, and a little expensive, perhaps. We begin with turning under three or four good, heavy crops of clover or peas, then we proceed to apply a good dressing of rich stable manure, and finally subsoil the ground eighteen or more inches deep. Results: Strong, thrifty, smooth and straight bodies, large bunches of fibrous roots of strong growing and fruit ing power. The picture shows our men in the act of subsoiling a field con taining over 100 acres, for nursery stock, to be planted in the spring. The soil, a rich, heavy, black loam, is eminently adapted for growing trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horticulturist's Rule-Book: A Compendium of Useful Information for Fruit-Growers, Truck-Gardeners, Florists, and Others The first edition of this manual was published late in 1889, and the second early in 1892, both by the Rural Publishing Company. When the first edition was compiled, the modern or current methods of dealing with insect and fungous pests upon large and commercial plantations were in their first experi mental stage. The volume, therefore, recorded the inexact knowledge of the time. It is only within the last two years that the methods of meeting these troubles have come to be generally accepted by horti culturists, and that experimenters have felt that they could give confident advice respecting the many mix tures, appliances, and operations which have been recommended in all quarters. It is time, therefore, that a third and complete edition of this handbook should be issued, to record and advise those practices which have been approved by experiment and experi ence. The contents of the volume have been gleaned from many sources, and whilst the compiler cannot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
