The applications presented touch on statistics, error correction coding theory, communications signaling, Boolean function analysis and synthesis, image processing, sequence theory (maximal length binary sequences, composite sequences, and Thue-Morse sequences) and signal representation. An interesting application of the Hadamard transform to images is the Naturalness Preserving Transform (NPT), which is presented. The NPT provides a way to encode an image that can be reconstructed when it is transmitted through a noisy or an unfriendly channel. The potential applications of the Hadamard transform are wide and the book samples many of the important concepts among a vast field of applications of the transform. The authors hope that their introduction will enhance the opportunities for interdiscipli nary work in this field. The book consists of ten chapters. The first seven chapters are devoted to the study of the background, motivation and development of orthogonal transforms, the prerequisites for which are a basic knowledge of Fourier series transform (e.g., via a course in differential equations) and matrix al gebra. The last three chapters are relatively specialized in that they are di rected toward certain applications of orthogonal transforms in digital signal processing. As such, a knowlegde of discrete probability theory is an essential additional prerequisite. A basic knowledge of communication theory would be helpful, although not essential. Much of the material presented here has evolved from graduate level courses offered by the Departments of Electrical Engineering at Kansas State University and the University of Texas at Arlington, during the past five years. With advanced graduate students, all the material was covered in one semester. In the case of first year graduate students, the material in the first seven chapters was covered in one semester. This was followed by a prob lems project-oriented course directed toward specific applications, using the material in the last three chapters as a basis.

Empirical contributions include a study of timing in Scandinavian polska performance showing that timing interacts with rhythmic features and a study of vocal melody rhythm in pre- and post-millennial popular music, showing significant differences in tempo, rhythmic density, and repetition in the two corpora. Theoretical contributions include a survey of timeline rhythms of African and African diasporic musics showing the prevalence of rhythms of a special type related to maximal evenness, an application of matrix algebra to rhythm and syncopation with analysis of clave rhythms, a ragtime corpus, and Balinese gong cycles, and a mathematical development of a new classification of smooth rhythms using a “shadow rhythm” algorithm suggested by Toussaint. Book excerpt: In virtually all types of experiments in which a response is analyzed as a function of frequency (e. g. , a spectrum), transform techniques can significantly improve data acquisition and/or data reduct ion. Research-level nuclear magnet ic resonance and infra-red spectra are already obtained almost exclusively by Fourier transform methods, because Fourier transform NMR and IR spectrometers have been commercially available since the late 1960·s. Similar transform techniques are equally valuable (but less well-known) for a wide range of other chemical applications for which commercial instruments are only now becoming available: for example, the first corrmercial Fourier transform mass spectrometer was introduced this year (1981) by Nicolet Instrument Corporation. The purpose of this volume is to acquaint practicing chemists with the basis, advantages, and applica of Fourier, Hadamard, and Hilbert transforms in chemistry. For tions almost all chapters, the author is the investigator who was the first to apply such methods in that field. The basis and advantages of transform techniques are described in Chapter 1. Many of these aspects were understood and first applied by infrared astronomers in the 1950·s, in order to improve the otherwise unacceptably poor signal-to-noise ratio of their spec tra. However, the computations required to reduce the data were painfully slow, and required a 1 arge computer.
