This coloring book is an opportunity to creatively color 50 Green County Wisconsin bran quilts...relax and have fun and try several different color patterns for the various barn quilts. Barn quilts help promote and celebrate the unique agricultural heritage and history of Green County through the visual combination of rural barns and barn quilt blocks. Barns are vital to the economic well being of the rural community and surrounding area. Homemade barn quilts provide warmth, beauty and an outlet for individual and group artistic expression. A barn quilt is made by painting a quilt pattern on a 3/4 inch MDO square then mounting it on a barn or other outlying structure. Two coats of primer are applied to both sides of the board and edges. After the pattern is drawn out painter's (Frog) tape is applied outlining the various sections of the quilt pattern. Three coats are more of each color are applied, with each coat being allowed to dry thoroughly. After the quilt is finished, it is allowed to cure for at least two weeks before it is mounted. Making a barn quilt allows individuals and volunteer groups the opportunity to create and paint their own quilt square. The design that is chosen may represent a family pattern from a loved quilt or perhaps a new pattern meaningful to the individual creator(s).

Book excerpt: Today colorful barn quilts, also called quilt blocks, can be found along many highways and rural back roads and even in towns and cities through out America and Canada. The interest in this fast growing grass roots art movement started not many years ago in Ohio and then continued to grow daily as communities, social clubs see what barn quilts can do to promote tourism and the local history/heritage. Brilliant barn quilt patterns are displayed on barns, corn cribs and other farm out buildings through farm country and even in towns and cities. This book is an opportunity for you to create many original color patterns for the featured quilt blocks.Barn Quilt Projects are usually supported and organized to educate, promote and celebrate the unique agricultural heritage of an area through the visual combination of barns and quilt patterns. Farms are vital to the economic well-being of many rural communities. Handmade barn quilt blocks provide warmth, beauty and an outlet for individual/group artistic expression. Plus, promoting tourism is an important part of all or most barn quilt projects. A barn quilt is made by by painting a quilt block design on MDO plywood, called signboard suitable for all forms of outdoor weather. Prior to painting the barn quilt pattern two or three coats of primer are applied to front, back and edges of the signboard, Next, a barn quilt pattern is drawn on the primed wood. The drawing creates numerous sections of the pattern. Frog tape, painter's tape, is applied to outline all sections of the pattern. Two or three coats of each selected paint is applied and allowed to dry over night. After the quilt is completely painted it is allowed to cure for about a week before bringing mounted.Barn quilt blocks located in Green County are found in different sizes...8 by 8, 4 by 4, 3 by 3 and even 2 by 2. Finished barn blocks are mounted on barns and other farm buildings with other smaller ones mounted and displayed in yards and parks. The Green County Project promotes the concept all around the area. Each quilt block is usually painted by volunteers, clubs and/or family members and when finished a farmer or property owner donates space for mounting and display. Making the barn quilt block allows volunteer groups from churches, schools, 4H, FFA, community service groups and even families the opportunity to create and paint a quilt block, The chosen quilt block may represent a family pattern from a family quilt.

Book excerpt: A drive through Shawano County Wisconsin is very colorful today because more than 300 brillant "quilt blocks," called barn quilts are on display on barns throughout the county. The Shawano County Barn Quilt Project was started by Shawano writer/author Jim Leuenberger in 2010. In June 2010 Jim proposed the idea to local 4-H clubs as a possible club service project. Since then, several clubs have sponsored and painted barn quilts. And individuals have supported the project through sponsoring a quilt and/or having a quilt put on their barn. Shawano County now calls the county the Barn Quilt Capital of Wisconsin, for good reason. I became interested in the project after seeing a barn quilt on my brother's barn and also because my grandfather settled in the area near Norrie, Wisconsin in 1892. I have always been interested in art so I put together two coloring books featuring barn quilts in Shawano County. A barn quilt is made by painting a pattern on two 4' by 8' sheets of 3/4 inch plywood and then mounting them on a barn to form an eight foot square. Two coats of primer are applied to both sides of the boards and the edges. After the pattern is drawn out, Frog (painters) tape is applied. Three coats of each color are applied, with each coat being allowed to dry overnight. After the quilt is finished it is allowed to dry for at least two weeks before it is put upon a barn.
