Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Hebrew Language Ir is not without considerable hesitation that I have concluded to insert the words Second Edition' in the title-page of this Grammar. It is in all essen tial points a new and independent work, written with little reference to its pre decessor, and retaining but few of its distinguishing features. The simple fact that it is a work on the same subject, and by the same author, is all that I can adduce to justify the appellation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Hebrew Language of the Old Testament Grammar especially has derived great advantage from this enlargement Of our view of language. It has received the new honour of being waited on by philosophy, and has been raised to the rank of a science. It is now no longer enough for a Grammar to contain a mere collection Of the pheno mena of a language as to its forms and syntax; but it must show how the forms' have arived at their present state; it must endeavour to attain a correct feeling of the sense which every word has on account of its form; it must trace how time and the fortune of the nation have modified its native type; and lastly, must show how all its Syntactical peculiari ties are founded on the laws of thought, and that there is nothing arbitrary or accidental in them, but that every language is in harmony with itself, and, like every plant or animal, acknowledges its conformity to certain eternal laws, even in its departure from the particular organization and laws of others. Less than this will not satisfy the demands of our age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Grammar of the Hebrew Language, Vol. 1 The appearance of a Hebrew Grammar, claiming to be a critical one, will not, it is thought, in the present state of philological science, prove entirely unacceptable. Indeed it might somewhat savour of affectation, were the author to offer any apology for the publication of his work in a period so productive in all the departments of literature; since it has been undertaken, and by the permission of the Almighty so far completed, with the design of meeting the urgent demands which the improvements effected in every branch of general philology now make on the cultivators of the Hebrew language for its further and more philosophical developement. With this view of the subject always before him, it has been the author's constant aim, to analytically investigate, and synthetically exhibit and explain, those laws which give rise to the phenomena of formation and inflection presented by one of the most natural and regular of languages; and at the same time incidentally to point out its surprisingly intimate connection, both lexicographical and grammatical, not only with the other Shemitish languages, but also with those of the Japhetish or Indo-European stock, - thereby laying open to the view of the future investigator in this interesting field of research the rich mine of discovery which awaits him. How far the present work may have succeeded in effecting these important purposes, it must be left for the candid and impartial critic to state, and for time to decide. The period has now gone by when a grammar was regarded as complete which exhibited the etymological and syntactical forms of a language as phenomena peculiar to itself, and whose sole merit consisted in the degree of diligence employed in collecting these facts, and the clearness of the arrangement in which they were displayed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical Grammar of the Hebrew Language, Vol. 2 of 2 Thus at the very outset, and while forming the plan of his syntax, the grammarian cannot fail to discover that the task he has under taken is one of much greater complexity and difliculty than the etymology. The latter mdeed cfl'ers in itself the outlines of a lan, by means of the several parts of speech, which are to be consi ered and discussed independent] of each other. In the syntax, on the contrary, the mechanism 0 1 age is to be viewed in o cration, that is, each word must be comred with regard to the ations it bears to others and the means employed for their indication; but as these relations are of so diversified a character, and as the same form which denotes one of them is also used for many more, he finds that with whatever topic he may think to commence his osition, the treatment of some other is necessarily presupposed, so that e is utterly at a loss where to begin and where to end. As, however, no scientific investigation can hope to be successful which is not conducted upon a plan derived from the subject itself and from the nature of the inquiry, he must settle his mode of treatment, notwithstanding these embarrassments, before proceeding further.
