Book excerpt: Genetically engineered foods, or organisms, are living things that have been synthetically modified so that they contain genes from a different life form or species. One example is sweet corn. Sweet corn has been synthetically modified to produce a form of poison that kills insects when they eat the corn. This is same corn that Americans eat daily and is an example of how genetically modified foods are increasingly being introduced into the American diet. The very first genetically modified organism (GMO) was insulin called Humulin, created in 1982. The first genetically modified (GM) food created was tomatoes and they hit grocery stores in 1994. Since 1994, the rise of GM foods has increased at an alarming rate. There has been a lot of public concern over the safety of these GM foods in the American diet. The concerns, as well as the safety and evaluation are presented in this paper. Animal toxicity studies have been performed with certain GM foods and it has been shown that there is a direct correlation between GMO feed and negative health effects and organ involvement. The studies performed on these animals are just a small window into to possible health effects on human beings. The results on most of the studies performed on animals that were given a GMO food diet indicated that there were toxic effects to the hepatic, pancreatic, reproductive, and pancreatic systems. The first studies on humans are also taking place, and the results from one study indicated that the toxin used in genetically engineered crops was detected in the blood of pregnant mothers and their unborn babies. The correlation to rising disease rates and GMO introduction cannot be ignored. Since GMO's were introduced in 1994, the amount of people with three or more chronic diseases has nearly doubled, from seven to thirteen percent. GMO foods are required to be labeled in 64 countries, not including the United States. With so much controversy over the health concerns caused from GMO foods, food should be labeled so that consumers can make a choice.

Book excerpt: The debate over genetically modified organisms: health and safety concerns, environmental impact, and scientific opinions. Since they were introduced to the market in the late 1990s, GMOs (genetically modified organisms, including genetically modified crops), have been subject to a barrage of criticism. Agriculture has welcomed this new technology, but public opposition has been loud and scientific opinion mixed. In GMOs Decoded, Sheldon Krimsky examines the controversies over GMOs—health and safety concerns, environmental issues, the implications for world hunger, and the scientific consensus (or lack of one). He explores the viewpoints of a range of GMO skeptics, from public advocacy groups and nongovernmental organizations to scientists with differing views on risk and environmental impact. Krimsky explains the differences between traditional plant breeding and “molecular breeding” through genetic engineering (GE); describes early GMO products, including the infamous Flavr Savr tomato; and discusses herbicide-, disease-, and insect-resistant GE plants. He considers the different American and European approaches to risk assessment, dueling scientific interpretations of plant genetics, and the controversy over labeling GMO products. He analyzes a key 2016 report from the National Academies of Sciences on GMO health effects and considers the controversy over biofortified rice (Golden Rice)—which some saw as a humanitarian project and others as an exercise in public relations. Do GMO crops hold promise or peril? By offering an accessible review of the risks and benefits of GMO crops, and a guide to the controversies over them, Krimsky helps readers judge for themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetically modified organisms or GMOs as it is called is when they alter the DNA of a fruit or vegetable. These experiments are done to increase yield or to make yield better. But there is no scientific proof that they are better or even safe. Only time will tell at a future date. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, rye, and barley. There are some people who have gluten intolerance. Gluten aggravates and causes inflammation in the small intestines of people suffering from celiac disease. These people need to have a diet that is gluten free. There are many products which are gluten free and finding an alternative should not be a major problem. Many of the vegetables, fruits, and dairy products are found gluten free. Many people are turning to this new diet. If you plan to start a gluten free diet, it is advisable to consult your doctor. Going vegetarian is quite a common thing these days. These vegetarians stick on to only vegetables, avoiding meat from their diet. We need to learn more about what is vegan. Vegan is a step ahead of being a vegetarian. They not only avoid eating meat, but they also avoid eating or using anything from the animal kingdom. They do not even consume milk, eggs or any dairy products. They look into all the details of the ingredients before buying a product. Bread, marshmallows, chewing gums, salad dressing, mayonnaise all of which contain some animal products that are not consumed by vegans. They are very strict about their diet. Their doctrine is saying No cruelty to animals. Many of the processed foods, sauces, ketchup, salad dressings, cereals, and crackers contain artificial sweeteners. These are very similar to our table sugar. But they are quite harmful to the body if taken in excess over a long period of time. Either sugar or any artificial sweetener in excess will cause obesity or even lead to diabetes. Large fructose corn syrup is an artificial sweetener that is applied in most of the prepared foods. As far as possible avoid using it. Try to maintain a healthy diet. If you plan to start a vegan diet or a gluten-free diet, see that you find suitable alternatives to get the needed minerals and vitamins for your body. There are no individuals more disturbed about the possible dangerous effects of GMO food than the fathers and mothers. In fact, that's why a lot of parents want to know what GMO food is capable of doing to the health of their children as well as the rest of their family. Anyway, that is why I want you to get a copy of this book: GMO Foods: The Truth About Genetically Modified Food... a Layman's Insight Into 'What Is GMO ' and the Genetic Engineering Chaos Today!
