Book excerpt: This monograph, which grew out of a series of lectures delivered by Stephen Wiggins at the Fields Institute in early 1993, is concerned with the geometrical viewpoint of the global dynamics of nonlinear dynamical systems. With appropriate examples and concise explanations, Wiggins unites many different topics into one volume and makes a unique contribution to the field. Engineers, physicists, chemists, and mathematicians who work on issues related to the global dynamics of nonlinear dynamical systems will find these lectures very useful.

Book excerpt: The fourth of a five-volume exposition of the main principles of nonlinear functional analysis and its applications to the natural sciences, economics, and numerical analysis. The presentation is self-contained and accessible to the non-specialist, and topics covered include applications to mechanics, elasticity, plasticity, hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, statistical physics, and special and general relativity including cosmology. The book contains a detailed physical motivation of the relevant basic equations and a discussion of particular problems which have played a significant role in the development of physics and through which important mathematical and physical insight may be gained. It combines classical and modern ideas to build a bridge between the language and thoughts of physicists and mathematicians. Many exercises and a comprehensive bibliography complement the text.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents the theory of nonconservative systems close to nonlinear integrable ones. With the example of concrete quasi-conservative systems close to nonintegrable ones, the results of numerical analysis are given, and the problem of applying the small parameter method is analyzed. The fundamantal part of the book deals with the investigation of the perturbable systems. Both autonomous and nonautonomous (periodic in time) systems are considered. The global analysis of systems close to the two-dimensional Hamiltonian ones takes a central place in the text. This global analysis includes the solution to problems such as the limit cycles, resonances, and nonregular dynamics. For the autonomous systems, one should note the analysis of the standard (Duffing and pendulum) equations including the solution to the “weakened” 16 Hilbert's problem, and for the nonautonomous systems one should note the mathematical foundations of the theory of synchronization of oscillations (the existence of new regimes, and the passage of invariant tori across the resonance zones under the change of detuning). The presentation is accompanied by examples. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main subject of this book is the connection between Calabi-Yau threefolds and modular forms. The book presents the general theory and brings together the known results. It studies hundreds of new examples of rigid and non-rigid modular Calabi-Yau threefolds and correspondences between them. Conjectures about the possible levels of modular forms connected with Calabi-Yau threefolds are presented. Tables of newforms of weight four and large levels are compiled and included in the appendix.

Book excerpt: This monograph is concerned with Galois theoretical embedding problems of so-called Brauer type with a focus on 2-groups and on finding explicit criteria for solvability and explicit constructions of the solutions. Before considering questions of reducing the embedding problems and reformulating the solvability criteria, the author provides the necessary theory of Brauer groups, group cohomology and quadratic forms. The book will be suitable for students seeking an introduction to embedding problems and inverse Galois theory. It will also be a useful reference for researchers in the field.

Book excerpt: Since the early 1960s, polyhedral methods have played a central role in both the theory and practice of combinatorial optimization. Since the early 1990s, a new technique, semidefinite programming, has been increasingly applied to some combinatorial optimization problems. The semidefinite programming problem is the problem of optimizing a linear function of matrix variables, subject to finitely many linear inequalities and the positive semidefiniteness condition on some of the matrix variables. On certain problems, such as maximum cut, maximum satisfiability, maximum stable set and geometric representations of graphs, semidefinite programming techniques yield important new results. This monograph provides the necessary background to work with semidefinite optimization techniques, usually by drawing parallels to the development of polyhedral techniques and with a special focus on combinatorial optimization, graph theory and lift-and-project methods. It allows the reader to rigorously develop the necessary knowledge, tools and skills to work in the area that is at the intersection of combinatorial optimization and semidefinite optimization. A solid background in mathematics at the undergraduate level and some exposure to linear optimization are required. Some familiarity with computational complexity theory and the analysis of algorithms would be helpful. Readers with these prerequisites will appreciate the important open problems and exciting new directions as well as new connections to other areas in mathematical sciences that the book provides.
