Book excerpt: Governments must work tirelessly to update their preparedness for dealing with natural and man-made disasters, as well as taking account of the increasingly present threat of terrorism. Efficient international cooperation is key to achieving safety and internationalizing security policy. This book presents the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) Engaging the Public to Fight the Consequences of Terrorism and Disasters, held in Tbilisi, Georgia, in June 2014. The purpose of the workshop was to analyze accumulated European theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the field of disaster prevention and the involvement of the public in preventing and fighting the consequences of terrorism, as well as natural and man-made disasters. There was a particular focus on the perspective of the region, especially with a view to meeting European Union standards and setting uniform and independent standards for hazard and risk assessment methods. The protection of economically critical infrastructure, such as dams, pipelines and transport and storage facilities, was addressed as were the issues of managing water and non-renewable resources, the disposal of dangerous chemicals and radioactive waste, and defensible methods of transport for fuel supplies and key personnel. Contributions reflected the extensive experience of the participating NATO and partner countries, including Armenia, Austria, Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Moldova, the Netherlands, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine as well as international organizations such as UNECE and NATO.

Book excerpt: The aviation industry presents a unique conundrum with the complex relationship between government oversight and business management. While the aviation industry operates in a business-oriented manner, a considerable number of aviation companies and airports worldwide are still government-owned. The COVID-19 pandemic has accentuated the pivotal role of governments in the industry, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of this interaction, given the sector's massive economic influence and the extensive investment required. The need for an in-depth exploration of this liaison has never been more pressing. Strategic Management and Policy in the Global Aviation Industry offers an insightful and comprehensive solution to this enigmatic issue. This book delves into the dynamics of the aviation sector's reliance on government intervention and support, providing invaluable perspectives for academic scholars and industry enthusiasts. It explores the critical role governments play in the development and sustainability of aviation companies, especially in the wake of the pandemic, where governments worldwide stepped in to bolster their national aviation companies. Additionally, the book explores the industry's efforts to align with the United Nations' sustainability targets and the critical influence of government regulations in achieving these goals. It also dissects the digital transformation and the integration of innovative technologies in aviation, setting the stage for a more efficient and innovative industry. Furthermore, it unveils the burgeoning role of artificial intelligence in the quest for cost reduction and enhanced operational efficiency in the fiercely competitive aviation market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water systems are building blocks for poverty alleviation, shared growth, sustainable development, and green growth strategies. They require data from in-situ observation networks. Budgetary and other constraints have taken a toll on their operation and there are many regions in the world where the data are scarce or unreliable. Increasingly, remote sensing satellite-based earth observation is becoming an alternative. This book briefly describes some key global water challenges, perspectives for remote sensing approaches, and their importance for water resources-related activities. It describes eight key types of water resources management variables, a list of sensors that can produce such information, and a description of existing data products with examples. Earth Observation for Water Resources Management provides a series of practical guidelines that can be used by project leaders to decide whether remote sensing may be useful for the problem at hand and suitable data sources to consider if so. The book concludes with a review of the literature on reliability statistics of remote-sensed estimations.
