Williams and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfossils are an abundant component of the sedimentary rock record. Their analysis can reveal not only the environments in which the rocks were deposited, but also their age. When combined, the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of microfossils offer enormous utility for archaeological and forensic investigations. Their presence can act as a geological ‘fingerprint’ and the tiniest fragment of material, such as a broken Iron Age potsherd, can contain a microfossil signature that reveals the geographical source of the materials under investigation. This book explores how microfossils are employed as tools to interpret human society and habitation throughout history. Examples include microfossil evidence associated with Palaeolithic human occupation at Boxgrove in Sussex, alongside investigations into human-induced landscape change during the Holocene. Further examples include the use of microfossils to provenance the source materials of Iron Age ceramics, Roman mosaics and Minoan pottery, in addition to their application to help solve modern murder cases, highlighting the diverse applications of microfossils to improving our understanding of human history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents an up-to-date, detailed overview of the Quaternary glaciations all over the world, not only with regard to stratigraphy but also with regard to major glacial landforms and the extent of the respective ice sheets. The locations of key sites are included. The information is presented in digital, uniformly prepared maps which can be used in a Geographical Information System (GIS) such as ArcView or ArcGIS. The accompanying text supplies the information on how the data were obtained (geomorphology, geological mapping, air photograph evaluation, satellite imagery), how the features were dated (14C, TL, relative stratigraphy) and how reliable they are supposed to be. All references to the underlying basic publications are included. Where controversial interpretations are possible e.g. in Siberia or Tibet, this is pointed out. As a result, the information on Quaternary glaciations worldwide will be much improved and supplied in a uniform digital format. The information on the glacial limits is compiled in digital form by the coordinators of the project, and is available for download at: http://booksite.elsevier.com/9780444534477/ Completely updated detailed coverage of worldwide Quaternary glaciations Information in digital, uniformly prepared maps which can be used in a GIS such as ArcView or ArcGis Step-by-step guideline how to open and use ArcGis files Possibility to convert the shapefiles into GoogleEarth kmz-files Availability of chronological controls

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of Rutland and the Parts of Lincoln, Leicester, Northampton, Huntingdon, and Cambridge: Included in Sheet 64 of the One-Inch Map of the Geological Survey, With an Introductory Essay on the Classification and Correlation of the Jurassic Rocks of the Midland District of England While the mapping of the district was in progress, the geology of which forms the subject of this Memoir, I had several opportunities of verifying the accuracy and skill with which Mr, Judd traced the geological boundary, lines, and the truly scientific manner in which he formed those deductions, the result of which has been expressed in a new classification of some of the formations comprised in the area. I may add that the circumstances which led to the resignation by Mr. Judd of his post on the Geological Survey have always been matter of deep regret to me, for it is not often that men are to be found who possess that rare combination of knowledge on so many special branches of geological inquiry which characterises the author of this memoir. I also feel that we are deeply indebted to Mr. Judd for having so frankly consented,-after he had left the Survey, to make his work complete by the gratuitous preparation of a memoir which he was in nowise bound to write. That this important work has been thoroughly well done all geologists will allow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
