The hornfels formed as a result of thermal recrystallization of foliated metamorphic rocks by acid intrusions. Extrusive rocks as flows and pyroclasts are exemplified by the folded Castine volcanics; intrusive rocks are represented by diorite, biotite granite, aplite, and basic dikes.
