Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A damaging earthquake with intensity VII MSK and local magni= tude 5. 1 occurred on November 8, 1983, at 0:49 GMT near the Belgium town of Liege in the border region between Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. This most severe earthquake in the northwestern part of Central Europe since more than thirty years has well been recorded by the dense seismic station network in West Germany which consists of more than twenty stations situated in the Lower Rhine Embayment and in the adjoining Rhenish Massif. Most of the stations are equipped with modern digital recording systems. Thus high-quality seismograms are available from the region east and southeast of the epicenter covering a distance range between 70 km and 144 km. From these data the source characteristics of the Liege mainshock and of its largest after= shock have been determined in order to get more information on the seismotectonic processes causing the Liege events. 2. Seismic Station Network During the period of 1976 to 1982 the seismic station network in the Lower Rhine Embayment and in the Rhenish Massif was consi= derably enlarged and mostly equipped with digital recording systems (Figure 1). At present there are more than twenty stations in operation. Most of them are operated by the Department of Earthquake Geology of the Geological Institute of the University of Cologne and the Geo= logical Survey of Nordrhein-Westfalen at Krefeld.

Book excerpt: Humanity’s ever-increasing hunger for mineral raw materials, caused by a growing global population and ever increasing standards of living, has resulted in economic geology becoming a subject of urgent importance. This book provides a broad panorama of mineral deposits, covering their origin and geological characteristics, the principles of the search for ores and minerals, and the investigation of newly found deposits. Practical and environmental issues that arise during the life cycle of a mine and after its closure are addressed, with an emphasis on sustainable and "green" mining. The central scientific theme of the book is to place the extraordinary variability of mineral deposits in the frame of fundamental geological processes. The book is written for earth science students and practicing geologists worldwide. Professionals in administration, resource development, mining, mine reclamation, metallurgy, and mineral economics will also find the text valuable. Economic Geology is a fully revised translation of the the fifth edition of the German language text Mineralische und Energie-Rohstoffe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an up-to-date overview of the coal deposits of South Limburg (Netherlands), the Aachen area (Germany), and the Campine area (Belgium). Although the amount of available literature on these coal deposits is quite vast, the majority of the texts date back to the mid-twentieth century, and most publications focus more on the stratigraphy of the coal layers and the rank of the coal. Moreover, the concept of continental drift is largely ignored in these publications. In addition to providing updated information, this book also discusses coal mining in these regions; the formation and petrography of coal; and the geological evolution of Western Europe/the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. In order to explain the tropical nature of the flora in the Carboniferous period, paleogeographic aspects are also taken into account.

Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of Geology, Second Edition presents in six volumes state-of-the-art reviews on the various aspects of geologic research, all of which have moved on considerably since the writing of the first edition. New areas of discussion include extinctions, origins of life, plate tectonics and its influence on faunal provinces, new types of mineral and hydrocarbon deposits, new methods of dating rocks, and geological processes. Users will find this to be a fundamental resource for teachers and students of geology, as well as researchers and non-geology professionals seeking up-to-date reviews of geologic research. Provides a comprehensive and accessible one-stop shop for information on the subject of geology, explaining methodologies and technical jargon used in the field Highlights connections between geology and other physical and biological sciences, tackling research problems that span multiple fields Fills a critical gap of information in a field that has seen significant progress in past years Presents an ideal reference for a wide range of scientists in earth and environmental areas of study

Sequence Stratigraphy, presently one of the most rapidly growing areas in geology, is concerned with the documentation and prediction of how sandstones (potential hydrocarbon reservoirs) and shales (potential source rocks) are distributed in time and space within sedimentary basins. The book takes a critical look at some of the sequence stratigraphy concepts, and provides an account of how these have been applied recently in NW Europe (North Sea, mid Norway and E. Greenland, Barents Sea and Svalbard), mainly in connection with the exploration for oil and gas. There is currently no similar book available.

Book excerpt: This volume is the record of a three day symposium entitled "Organic Geochemistry in Exploration of the Norwegian Shelf", which was sponsored by the Norwegian Petroleum Society (Norsk Petroleumsforening) and held at the Rogalands Regional College, Stavanger on 22-24 October 1984. Twenty-nine papers were presented, and all but one are published in full herein. The aim of the conference was to focus on the application of geochemical methods to the current and highly active exploration of the Norwegian offshore. Emphasis was on practical interpretation and case histories rather than laboratory methods and techniques, and a strong attendance was sought among geologists and seismic interpreters active in exploration in Norway and Northwest Europe generally. On all counts the symposium was a great success with a total of 213 participants registered. In his opening address Mr Egil Bergsager, director of the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, observed that during the 1970s petroleum geochemistry emerged from being a somewhat academic pursuit into a practical aid in exploration for hydrocarbons. This first stage, when many of the basic methods were developed, has now led in the 1980s to an expansion into applications in regional geological studies, including mathematical modelling of thermal history, hydrocarbon migration and basin development.
