Book excerpt: Linguists and philosophers have attempted different theoretical models to formalize the structural properties and the various uses of the genitives. Consequently, a large number of works listing the different uses of genitives are attested in different languages of the world. The works done from diachronic perspectives are as interesting and open as those done from synchronic perspectives. However, in spite of the attention that the issue of genitives has received in the linguistics tradition, the issue remains open. I have attempted to examine Hindi genitives from the point of view of their treatment in ancient traditional grammars in Indian and Westerns grammatical traditions as well as the way they have been approached in the modern linguistics theories. I have briefly outlined the approaches that ancient grammarians took with regards to the forms and functions of the genitive constructions. In this context, I have cited both Indian and Western grammarians. In the modern linguistics approaches, I discuss works of traditional Hindi grammarians and modern generative linguists. I have specially taken the core assumptions of Chomskyan Case Theory within the principles and Parameters framework of linguistics to examine the internal structure and the syntactic operations within the genitive constructions in Hindi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of Non-nominative Subjects (NNSs) presents the most recent research on this topic from a wide range of languages from diverse language families of the world, with ample data and in-depth analysis. A significant feature of these volumes is that authors with different theoretical perspectives study the intricate questions raised by these constructions. Some of the central issues include the subject properties of noun phrases with ergative, dative, accusative and genitive case, case assignment and checking, anaphor–antecedent coreference, the nature of predicates with NNSs, whether they are volitional or non-volitional, possibilities of control coreference and agreement phenomena. These analyses have significant implications for theories of syntax and verbal semantics, first language acquisition of NNSs, convergence of case marking patterns in language contact situations, and the nature of syntactic change.

Book excerpt: Suffixaufnahme is an unusual pattern of multiple case marking due to agreement: a nominal that is already case-marked for its own adnominal function in addition copies the case of the nominal to which it is to be related. The essays in this collection comprehensively examine this little known phenomenon in all areas where it is (or was) attested--most typically in Anatolia, the Caucasus and Transcaucasus, Aryan India, Eastern Siberia, Ethiopia, and aboriginal Australia. The definitive comparative account of Suffixaufnahme, this volume shows how an ostensibly marginal pattern of case agreement sheds light on major theoretical issues in syntax and morphology, in historical linguistics, and in typology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the syntax of Japanese in comparison with other Asian languages within the Principles-and-Parameters framework. It grows out of a collaborative research project on comparative syntax pursued at the Center for Linguistics at Nanzan University from 2008-2013, in collaboration with researchers at Tsing Hua (Hsinchu, Taiwan), Connecticut, EFL U. (Hyderabad, India), Siena, and Cambridge. In ten chapters, the book compares the syntax of Japanese to that of Chinese, Korean, Turkish, Hindi, and Malayalam, focusing on ellipsis, movement, and Case. The first three chapters compare nominal structures in Japanese and Chinese and account for the differences between them. An important point of comparison in these chapters is the patterns of N'-ellipsis the two languages exhibit. The subsequent two chapters focus on ellipsis. One examines argument ellipsis in Japanese, Turkish, and Chinese, and argues for its correlation with the absence of
