Crime down there is closely linked to political corruption, that's why it is so hard to fight it. The author was granted the rare authorization to follow some police patrols in the most volatile areas; he also met several gang leaders (Dons), including one who was murdered a few weeks later, and he gives a dreadful insight into the Jamaican society at large. Thibault Ehrengardt is the former chief editor of Natty Dread Magazine, and the current head of DREAD Editions; he's written several books about Jamaica. www.jamaica-insula.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western in the Global South investigates the Western film genre's impact, migrations, and reconfigurations in the Global South. Contributors explore how cosmopolitan directors have engaged with, appropriated, and subverted the tropes and conventions of Hollywood and Italian Westerns, and how Global South Westerns and Post-Westerns in particular address the inequities brought about by postcolonial patriarchy, globalization and neoliberalism. The book offers a wide range of historical engagements with the genre, from African, Caribbean, South and Southeast Asian, Central and South American, and transnational directors. The contributors employ interdisciplinary cultural studies approaches to cinema, integrating aesthetic considerations with historical, political, and gender studies readings of the international appropriations and U.S. re-appropriations of the Western genre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a lively and richly illustrated history of the island of Jamaica from its discovery (1494) to the abolition of slavery (1838). Find more about the arrival of Columbus, the Spanish dominion, the English (Cromwell) capture in 1655 and the birth of the dreadful buccaneers of Port Royal (Henry Morgan)! Slaves are at the heart of the history of Jamaica: some fled from the plantations to become the feared Maroons (they almost ruined the entire colony), others like Tacky rebelled against the Whites. In the 18th century, Jamaica became a giant cane field as sugar represented the true wealth of the island. But everything stopped in 1838. The author has given priority to ancient testimonies to make it more exciting and lively.

Book excerpt: Thomas Thistlewood (1721-1786) was a British estate overseer and small landowner in western Jamaica. He arrived in Jamaica, the most important of the British sugar colonies in 1750, when he was 29 years old. He became the overseer or manager of the Egypt sugar plantation near the small port of Savanna la Mar. He stayed in Jamaica until his death in 1786. He wrote a diary, which eventually ran to some 10,000 pages, and this diary became an important historical document on slavery and history of Jamaica.
