Book excerpt: Perhaps no state rivals Virginia when it comes to early history. Yet, there are many aspects of Virginia's early history that are either unknown or vaguely known by the general public. Over the last thirty years, Larson has written over thirty plays that deal with these aspects and the generally well-known men and women involved in them. These people include such names as Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, Patrick Henry, Meriwether Lewis, John Randolph, John Robinson, Nathaniel Bacon, William Berkeley, John Chiswell, Martha Jefferson, Harry Lee, Nancy Randolph, Theodosia Burr and Edmund Pendleton. The name Gabriel Prosser is little known, yet in the summer of 1800 this enslaved blacksmith planned to lead a large slave insurrection in the Richmond area; however information regarding the revolt was leaked prior to its execution and Gabriel's plans were thwarted. Gabriel and twenty-six members of the revolt were hanged. In 2007 Virginia Governor Tim Kaine gave Gabriel and his followers an informal pardon in recognition that his cause, "the end of slavery and the furtherance of equality for all people --- has prevailed in the light of history."

Book excerpt: A year after he lost his wife and child to a sudden storm, Gabriel Pennant stands vigil on a Cornish clifftop and spots a small boat in distress as another storm rolls in. Gabriel fights strong winds and dangerous waves to rescue an unconscious young man. He carries the man back to his cottage and sits with him until he wakes, only to discover he's suffering from amnesia. When Sam wakes up in the cottage of a brooding, handsome stranger with a tragic past who saved him from drowning but obviously doesn't want him there, he remembers nothing except being captive in his own body. Then they are trapped together as the village is cut off by a landslip, and Gabriel has no choice but to offer grudging hospitality. Gabriel finds himself unwillingly attracted to his houseguest, and Sam just wants to take away the pain in the eyes of the lonely widower. But first they need to find out who Sam is and why he's having nightmares about men trying to kill him.

Book excerpt: "Are you sure, Gabriel? Are you sure you're not troubled as well?" Priti asks at their first encounter. "I don't think so, Priti, but trouble always seems to find me." Gabriel replies. Gabriel carries the weight of guilt over his older brother's suicide for much of his childhood until a seminal event at the start of adolescence reminds him of a forgotten detail from that tragic night. Gabriel sets his sights on Jack Winter, an elderly neighbor whom he now suspects as having molested his brother, driving him to suicide, and he vows to avenge his brother's death. The seed of this revenge grows and grows until the start of summer of 1983, after his last year of high school. Knowing that his group of friends will soon disperse, Gabriel reveals his plan to kill Mr. Winter. Two people with their own hidden skeletons enter his life during the summer of '83, uncle Leon, an Israeli soldier back to visit after his participation in the Lebanon War, and Priti, a beautiful girl with her own hidden scars. But despite the positive influences of these two people in his life, Gabriel has lived too long with anger and despair, and the only way to exorcise the haunting images of his brother's swinging body is to honor his vow for revenge. "Crafty, enticing fiction incorporating engaging themes of friendship and conspiracy." - Kirkus review "Gabriel's Storm is a thoughtful coming-of-age story deftly set around a captivating crime plot." - Clarion review "Gabriel's Storm is a fantastic read that is easy to follow and fall in love with. I was thinking about the characters long after I finished reading." - Manhattan Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabriel's Rebellion tells the dramatic story of what was perhaps the most extensive slave conspiracy in the history of the American South. Douglas Egerton illuminates the complex motivations that underlay two related Virginia slave revolts: the first, in 1800, led by the slave known as Gabriel; and the second, called the 'Easter Plot,' instigated in 1802 by one of his followers. Although Gabriel has frequently been portrayed as a messianic, Samson-like figure, Egerton shows that he was a literate and highly skilled blacksmith whose primary goal was to destroy the economic hegemony of the 'merchants,' the only whites he ever identified as his enemies. According to Egerton, the social, political, and economic disorder of the Revolutionary era weakened some of the harsh controls that held slavery in place during colonial times. Emboldened by these conditions, a small number of literate slaves--most of them highly skilled artisans--planned an armed insurrection aimed at destroying slavery in Virginia. The intricate scheme failed, as did the Easter Plot that stemmed from it, and Gabriel and many of his followers were hanged. By placing the revolts within the broader context of the volatile political currents of the day, Egerton challenges the conventional understanding of race, class, and politics in the early days of the American republic.

Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts, Gabriel’s Angel tells the heartwarming story of a recluse receiving the gift of love to brighten his holiday season—and his life. Tragedy drove Gabriel Bradley into isolation. A secluded cabin, far from those who failed him, provides the shelter his broken heart requires to heal and the space he needs to nurture his works of art. Then in the midst of a blizzard, a very pregnant Laura Malone appears on his doorstep, shivering from more than the cold. His mysterious, beautiful guest—willing to risk her life to protect her unborn child—is clearly in danger. And as Gabriel reluctantly cares for Laura, she returns his attentions with affection and passion, restoring his ability to hope, dream, and to love once again.
