Book excerpt: When a dying time-traveler arrives in Innerworld to warn Shara Locke of a coming disaster, she is convinced that if she goes back far enough in time, she can prevent the catastrophe and clear up a personal dilemma in her ancestry. Then Gabriel Drumayne, a Noronian historian, discovers Shara's plans and threatens to expose her unless she takes him along. Gabriel's agenda: stop Shara. But the device is faulty, each time-hop rapidly disintegrating Innerworld and its people, while igniting the Noronian mating fever in Gabriel and Shara, bonding them as soul-mates. When the pair finally return, nothing is as it was. The only solution: erase all memory of their journey including information gathered to prevent the coming disaster... and their love. When Gallant Voyager, an agent for the Consociation, sees the victim speak his final words to Cherry, he kidnaps her "for her own protection". Gallant needs his prisoner's cooperation to discover why the trader was permanently silenced. But he has no idea how much trouble he's brought aboard his ship. While tracking the killer to a distant galaxy, his verbal battles with Cherry turn physical as primitive passions burn away their differences. Then Cherry discovers Gallant's truth: he is slave to the barbaric alien behind the murder, and there's a double-cross in the works. With her own life in danger, Cherry faces a choice: put on the performance of her life to escape the captor she's come to love and warn the Consociation of impending invasion, or rely on a suspicious offer of help from one of the barbarians to save her lover. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Council on Foreign Relations is the most influential foreign-policy think tank in the United States, claiming among its members a high percentage of government officials, media figures, and establishment elite. For decades it kept a low profile even while it shaped policy, advised presidents, and helped shore up U.S. hegemony following the Second World War. In 1977, Laurence H. Shoup and William Minter published the first in-depth study of the CFR, Imperial Brain Trust, an explosive work that traced the activities and influence of the CFR from its origins in the 1920s through the Cold War. Now, Laurence H. Shoup returns with this long-awaited sequel, which brings the story up to date. Wall Street’s Think Tank follows the CFR from the 1970s through the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union to the present. It explains how members responded to rapid changes in the world scene: globalization, the rise of China, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the launch of a “War on Terror,” among other major developments. Shoup argues that the CFR now operates in an era of “Neoliberal Geopolitics,” a worldwide paradigm that its members helped to establish and that reflects the interests of the U.S. ruling class, but is not without challengers. Wall Street’s Think Tank is an essential guide to understanding the Council on Foreign Relations and the shadow it casts over recent history and current events.

Book excerpt: The mid-twentieth century saw the birth of popular occultism in Europe and the New World, including an interest in witchcraft. Chief among these was Wicca, a recension of ceremonial magic and nature worship advanced by Gerald Gardner and Alex Sanders, now widely regarded as a religion. However, lesser-known streams of the witch-current thrived the shadows, having older historical roots, and linked to a body of practice - witch-bottles, knotted cord spells, curses, exorcisms, sexual magic, and charms ranging from the conjuration of angels to protection for livestock and hearth. This is Traditional Witchcraft, whose origin in part lies with the sorcery of the cunning-folk of Britain and Colonial America. Eschewing the popular occult limelight, its perpetuation as a mystery-cult continues as a largely closed group of initiates. Now revised and expanded, the second edition of CHILDREN OF CAIN is the definitive history of Traditional Witchcraft and its key operatives in Britain and the United States, and is based on over forty years of research and private collaboration with practitioners of this mysterious form of folk magic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spencer Golub builds on a recent trend in theater and performance studies in which scholars bring philosophy to bear on our understanding of performance. In Golub's case, however, he also adds to the mix a meditation on the nature of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, from which he has long suffered. Golub sees Wittgenstein's work as having both descriptive power in relation to OCD and, as such, offering some relief from this condition. Golub analyzes a broad range of dramatists, novelists, and filmmakers, among them Richard Foreman, Mac Wellman, Peter Handke, David Mamet, and Alfred Hitchcock. In their work, Golub finds an overriding interest in the relationship between the linguistic and the visual. Like Wittgenstein, the work of these artists is concerned with the limits of language's representational capacity. For Golub, it is these limits that give Wittgenstein's thought its therapeutic quality with respect to OCD. And it is Wittgenstein's notion of "pain behavior" that for Golub illuminates "performance behavior" - that which gives public expression to private experience. In this highly unconventional book, Golub charts new directions for exploring the relationship between theater and philosophy, and even for scholarly criticism itself.
