Book excerpt: A boy returns home from seminary to a family on the verge of collapse For almost seven years, Mrs. Fury has done nothing but think of Peter. Of her five children, he is the youngest, her darling boy whose future she planned out long ago. It was for Peter that she took one child out of college and married another off—for Peter that she sent a third to work at sea. She has sacrificed everything so that Peter could return to Ireland to study for the priesthood. He is to be the family’s salvation—but after seven years in seminary, Peter has failed. Mrs. Fury receives two telegrams: One telling her that Peter is coming home, the other bearing the news that her eldest son, Anthony, has fallen from his ship’s mast and is in a hospital in New York. With two slips of paper, Mrs. Fury’s hopes for the future are dashed. But this Irishwoman is strong as iron, and she will do whatever it takes to keep her family together—if only for Peter’s sake. The Furys is the first book of James Hanley’s acclaimed Furys Saga.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Less than two decades after the Yugoslav Wars ended, the edifice of parliamentary government in the Western Balkans is crumbling. This collapse sets into sharp relief the unreformed authoritarian tendencies of the region's entrenched elites, many of whom have held power since the early 1990s, and the hollowness of the West's "democratization" agenda. There is a widely held assumption that institutional collapse will precipitate a new bout of ethnic conflict, but Mujanovic argues instead that the Balkans are on the cusp of a historic socio-political transformation. Drawing on a wide variety of sources, with a unique focus on local activist accounts, he argues that a period of genuine democratic transition is finally dawning, led by grassroots social movements, from Zagreb to Skopje. Rather than pursuing ethnic strife, these new Balkan revolutionaries are confronting the "ethnic entrepreneurs" cemented in power by the West in its efforts to stabilise the region since the mid-1990s. This compellingly argued book harnesses the explanatory power of the striking graffiti scrawled on the walls of the ransacked Bosnian presidency during violent anti-government protests in 2014: 'if you sow hunger, you will reap fury'.

Book excerpt: "Captain Alicia DeVries, Imperial Cadre, has been many things in her life. An Imperial Marine, dedicated to the protection and preservation of the Terran Empire she loves. An Imperial Cadre drop commando, personal liegewoman of Emperor Seamus II, whom she honors and reveres. Hero of the Terran Empire, one of only three living holders of the Banner of Terra. And now, outcast, rogue, pirate ... and madwoman." "From the time she graduated from high school, Alicia DeVries knew what she wanted to do with her life, and she did it well. On planets like Gyangtse, Chengchou, Fuller, and Louvain - in cities like Zhikotse and Shallingsport - she's put her life on the line in defense of her Empire and Emperor again and again. She's given her blood, and the lives of men and women closer to her than brothers and sisters." "But her dead have been betrayed in the name of political expediency. The justice they deserved has been denied, and a brokenhearted Alicia DeVries has resigned her commission and retired to the colony world of Mathison with her family to begin a new life." "Yet Alicia is still a warrior, and the pirates who attacked Mathison, tortured and murdered her family, and left her for dead, are about to discover just how big a mistake they made." "Imperial Intelligence can't find them. The Imperial Fleet can't catch them. Local defenses can't stop them. But Alicia has stolen an imperial A1 starship from the bleeding edge of technology and set out to teach them what vengeance truly is." "Her fellow veterans think she's gone mad, the Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders, and the "pirates" have allies at the highest levels of the Imperial government. But Alicia DeVries has two allies of her own. Allies no one knows about. Allies as implacable as she is: a self-aware computer, and a creature from the mists of Old Earth's most ancient legends."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: From the cofounder of Fight for a Better America, the non-profit organization dedicated to voter engagement and local grassroots organizing, is a searing, unflinching, and thorough exploration of the Republican Party’s dissolution of government. “Only when enough of us recognize that the Republicans are waging a war on our democracy will we be able to rally a resistance, fight back, and reclaim our government,” writes author Bill Kuhn in this engrossing and outraged study of the GOP’s commitment to weaken public institutions and erode the public’s trust in democracy. Although conflicts over the role of government have always existed, the level of partisanship and division that we know today is staggering. Can the US repair forty years of the right’s destruction? The answer is yes, says Kuhn, but only if voters understand the Republican Party’s role in the country’s growing division. Written in brilliant and easily digestible chapters, you will discover how Trump became the logical consequence of decades worth of corruption, fear-mongering, and destructive policies. Kuhn uncovers the blatantly racist style of politics inherent in the GOP from Goldwater’s opposition to the Civil Rights Movement to Reagan’s aversion to public welfare. Each chapter is poignant and a well-researched entry contributing to the national conversation and debate of how we got to where we are today. Facts & Fury is a revelatory work of scholarship and a laceration of the Republication Party that will energize the country and encourage discussion. Much more, it is a call to arms to halt the GOP’s efforts, engage our neighbors, and ultimately strengthen American democracy.
