Book excerpt: A year living on Symi, a Greek island. James' blog posts from 2013, edited and set out in printed form with images by Neil Gosling, take us through one whole year living on a small Greek island in southeast Greece. From winter storms to summer visitors, from photo walks to book signings, and from goats to shrimp festivals, Village View gives us an upfront, honest and mildly edited account of James and Neil's eleventh year on Symi. "Symi's charm is in its people and the minutiae of their lives; James's great talent lies in his careful observation of the absurd and the amusing, the dramas and the difficulties, because nothing in Symi is ever simple, and in reporting what he sees with kind humour and a writer's eye for the details essential to lively travel writing." Anne Zouroudi, author of Bloomsbury's Greek Detective mysteries.

Book excerpt: This prince? He's anything but charming. I've never been the girl who's dreamt of a prince rescuing me from a fire-breathing dragon before whisking me away to his castle. So when I fly all the way to Ireland to find my long-lost dad, I have no intention of playing the damsel in distress to some dude. But the night I encounter--and accidentally wallop upside the head--Prince Olivier of Salasia, my plans are completely upended. This prince is the opposite of charming, though. After thirty seconds in his presence, I want to feed him to a dragon. But fate is a fickle b*tch. Before I know it, I agree to team up with Olivier in the search for my dad. As I travel across Europe with this actual honest-to-god prince, I wonder, what's the worst that could happen? It's not like I'll be stupid enough to fall in love with Prince Charming.

Book excerpt: Dust and Clay is a fiction expressed through multiple points of views and is set in rural Jamaica, where the legacy of the resisting strength of its people remains deeply rooted in the land. The Island provides a backdrop to the nuanced dialogues, its unforgettable characters and their journey along the winding and dusty roads which inevitably bring them home. Lead character Corrine MacGrady ventures away from her small and impoverished district of Longwood, to seek the promise in her studies to become a midwife. Through her empowering journey to foreign lands and back, we experience the cadence in the language of the island and the impassioned personalities of its people. This evocative story saturated with trials, pain and joy, demonstrates the destitution, fortitude and harmony that resonates within the lives and dreams of the people.

Book Synopsis Krisanthi's War by : Ida Rae Egli

Book excerpt: Like Homer's The Iliad, Ida Egli's new novel, Krisanthi's War, is an antiwar epic that brings together the personal and the political and wanders back and forth from the 1930s to the 1980s. The war is World War II. Krisanthi is a modern-day Greek woman who chronicles the lives and the deaths of her family members who strive to survive during the invasion and the occupation of their homeland by German soldiers. Since the characters are mostly Greeks, they have names like Achilles, Penelope and Kalliope, and, since they're Greeks, the Trojan War isn't ancient history, but part of the living, breathing present. Krisanthi's War is full of the sights and thesmells of olives and goats, blood and wine, even as it explores the nature of orthodoxy and mystery. When liberation comes and the characters emerge from cellars and go into the Mediterranean sunlight the reader feels a sense of exhilaration and joy. It isn't revenge or punishment that the author is after, but rather empathy and compassion. Egli offers no easy-to-follow recipe for how to endure in our own difficult times, but she does provide at the end of her narrative a recipe for Loukoumáthes, those delicious fritters often drizzled with honey that melt in your mouth. The novelist, Lawrence Durrell, makes a brief but welcome appearance in these pages, and many of the minor characters, including Andreas Papaloizos and Kyriokos Petaluthas, are as endearing as Krisanthi, her mama and her papa. If you want to meet real Greeks, explore Greek history and fathom the nature of love itself, this book is for you.
