Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an anthology of humorous poetry that has been 40 years in the making. I'm not going as far back as my silly limerick about a gorilla which I wrote when I was nine or ten but I do remember the pleasure I got in composing it and in making other children laugh with it. I suppose my 'serious' attempts at humorous poetry began at Bradford University where I was the unofficial resident poet at a fortnightly folk club in the cellar of the Catholic chaplaincy. I felt obliged to inflict my warped observations and tortuous puns on whoever remained in the room. I love the way a whole poem can grow from just one observation, one comment, one pun. I find that developing that idea and playing around with words, even parts of words, to be a deeply satisfying process. I use humorous poetry as a way of expressing my opinions, feelings or personality in a brief, easily accessible and hopefully entertaining way. Enjoy/endure.

I have been more influenced by the treat ment - and occasionally by the subject - Of a poem than by its authorship or date. In the early days, soon after Chaucer, we are in an epoch of rough physical humour, of drinking songs, of simple fables; when law-suits and money, the unknown king and his outspoken subject, the Church and the Devil, provided the stock elements of laughter. There was a directness and a vital strength about these singers which I seem to see reflected in the bold detail-carvings of the Gothic Cathedrals, where Humour treads upon the heels of the Grotesque, and laughter is sometimes very near akin to tears. Not until the spacious days of Elizabethan literature does this weight of inevitable realism begin to lift. Soon afterwards, the Cavaliers were among the most delightful lyrists in the world, but rather in the passionate than the humorous Vein and after these again there is an interval, an interregnum, in which it may be recognised that the old style is dead, and the new one has not been born. Of this is the long newsletter, meant to be witty, and occasionally humorous. But the charm of the ancient days had vanished, without being as yet replaced by any compensating skill. The old stories had all been told, and there was no one to touch them with a new life or to find fresh sub jects for his verse. The unfortunate repetition which comes from lack of ideas became common, and the Primitive Jest flourished in the land only not perishing outright because, in Rabelais phrase, it was in one form or another an essential human attribute. As Mr. Andrew Lang has sung. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Darren Bane adds insult to infamy with this, his little poem book, a comical compilation of ridiculous rhymes, punny poetic (perhaps pathetic?) prose, laughably ludicrous lyrics and pitiful parodies. This asinine anthology includes a tender, touching tribute to actress Catherine Zeta Jones, verses which feature fairly credible rhymes for the words 'vasectomy' and 'follicles', others which push the boundaries of poetic licence and, of course, the local literary legend - if only in the mind of the author - that is Shiny Table. More than 30 years worth of witty/witless wordplay has been brought together in the rib-tickling tome that is: From Bard To Verse.
