Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces a century of militarised communication that began in the United States in April, 1917, with the institution of the Committee on Public Information (CPI), headed by George Creel and tasked with persuading a divided US public to enter World War I. Creel achieved an historic feat of communication: a nationalising mass mediation event well before any instantaneous mass media technologies were available. The CPI’s techniques and strategies have underpinned marketing, public relations, and public diplomacy practices ever since. The book argues that the CPI’s influence extends unbroken into the present day, as it provided the communicative and attitudinal bases for a new form of political economy, a form of corporatism, that would come to its fullest flower in the “globalisation” project of the mid-1990s.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive examination of key issues regarding global communication, focusing particularly on international news and strategic communication. It addresses those news factors that influence the newsworthiness of international events, providing a synthesis of both theoretical and practical studies that highlight the complicated nature of the international news selection process. It also deals with international news coverage, presenting research on the cross-national and cross-cultural nature of media coverage of global events, in the interdisciplinary context of research on political communication, war coverage, new technologies and online communication. The work concludes with a focus on global strategic communications: in the age of globalization, global economies and cross-national media ownership, chapters here provide readers with some of the most up-to-date research on international advertising, public relations and other key issues in international communications. With contributions from many of the leading scholars in the field of international media communication research, this collection presents a valuable resource for advancing knowledge and understanding of the complicated international communication phenomenon. It will be of value to upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in mass media and communication programs, and to scholars whose research focuses on global communication research.

Book excerpt: This book examines the state of strategic communication as a discipline and how it has emerged as a unique area of scholarship in the beginning of the 21st century. Strategic communication encompasses all communication that is substantial for the survival and sustained success of entities like corporations, governments, non-profits, social movements, and celebrities. A major aspect of the field is the purposeful use of communication by an organization to engage in conversations of strategic significance to its goals. The contributions in this book provide unique insights, make compelling arguments, and highlight promising areas of scholarship in strategic communication. Presented in four parts, the chapters explore the emergence of strategic communication, its conceptual foundations, its expanding body of knowledge, and the foundation for further development and new directions in the field. Of interest to those studying communication from the perspectives of communication science, management theory, organizational studies, or business administration, this volume will also be useful for readers who are new to strategic communication, and who are interested in the field for its new avenues of research. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Strategic Communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The roots of strategic communication lie in public relations, which has been a well-established concept in countries around the globe for more than 100 years. In the United States, for instance, this concept has been associated with publicity, promotion, and public policy battles. At times, especially in the early years of the 20th Century, it was seen as inseparable from propaganda and a means for promoting and protecting democracy. The field has developed immeasurably in the past few decades, but strategic communication is still a topic with strong, influential links to a variety of different disciplines, and increasingly relevant in both a professional and academic capacity. This Major Work captures the definitions, key developments and future of the field through a carefully-selected collection of seminal papers on the topic. Volume One: Defining Strategic Communication: Groundings, Forewarnings, and Calls to Action Volume Two: Public Arena: Input, Power, Converging/Diverging Voices, and Tensions Volume Three: Discursive and Dialogic Organizations and the Stakeholder View: Social Constructions and Functionalist Perspectives Volume Four: The Future of Strategic Communication: Organizational and Societal Well-being, Influences, Measures, and New Directions

Book excerpt: The focus of this book is Strategic Communication. Communication can be defined as strategic if its development and/or dissemination is driven by an expected outcome. These outcomes can be attitudinal, behavioral, persuasive or knowledge-related; they can lead to change or engagement, or they can miss their mark entirely. In looking at strategic communication, one is not limited to a specific context or discipline. Many of the scholars in the volume are generating research that covers strategic communication in ways that are meaningful across fields. This volume collects the work and idea of scholars who cover the spectrum of strategic communication from source to message to audience to channel to effects. Strategic Communication offers news perspectives across contexts and is rooted firmly in the rich research traditions of persuasion and media effects. Spanning multiple disciplines and written to appeal to a large audience, this book will be found in the hands of researchers, graduate students, and students doing interdisciplinary coursework.
