Book excerpt: Molecular biologist Evan Pannick encounters complete powerlessness in the midst of a personal medical crisis that his doctors do not understand, when he and his girls soccer team are held hostage by an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. Modern medicine is supposed to have all the answers. Inmates in Federal Prisons are not supposed to be able to take hostages outside prison walls. Molecular biologist Evan Pannick is just supposed to get his biomedical grant out on time, coach soccer and enjoy his quietly subdued academic life. On One Freak Day everything changes and Evan Pannick finds himself unwillingly transferred from his peaceful academic world to the center of a deepening dilemma fraught with multiple challenges in an escalating situation that threatens him, his daughter and the girls he coaches. Centered in Lexington, Kentucky, the story shuttles between hometown quirkiness and the Federal Prison on the outskirts of town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the freak as perceived by the Western gaze has always been a part of the Latin American imaginary, from the letters that Columbus wrote about his encounters with dog-faced people to Shakespeare's Caliban. The freak acquires greater significance in a globalized, neoliberal world that defines the "abnormal" as one who does not conform mentally, physically, or emotionally and is unable or unwilling to follow the economic and cultural norms of the institutions in power. Freak Performances examines the continuing effects of colonialism on modern Latin American identities, with a particular focus on the way it has constructed the body of the other through performance. Theater questions the representations of these bodies, as it enables the empowerment of the silenced other; the freak as a spectacle of otherness finds in performance an opportunity for re-appropriation by artists resisting the dominant authority. Through an analysis of experimental theater, dance theater, performance art, and gallery-based installation art across eight countries, Analola Santana explores the theoretical issues shaped by the encounters and negotiations between different bodies in the current Latin American landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International law, sometimes called the law of nations, has evolved over the last 400 years. The three major sources of international law according to Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice are: international conventions or treaties; international customs; and the general principles of law as recognized by civilized nations. The Permanent Court of Arbitration was established by the Hague Conferences of 1899 and 1907, and the Permanent Court of International Justice was set up in 1921 and succeeded in 1946 by the International Court of Justice. Since World War II international organizations such as the UN and its related bodies have contributed to the expansion and increased scope of international law to include political and strategic affairs, economic, social, communications, and environmental matters. By the 1990s international law had shown its durability and flexibility by expanding to cover new areas of world relations, and its efficacy through the machinery of the UN.

It explains the Hellenic era of three millennia of Philology as part of all other human activities; reflecting the ancient, classical, ecclesiastical, medieval and modern concepts, including the current social and economic conditions. Furthermore, it elaborates on the philological class stratification as it appears in life; among the primitive civilisations and modern European literature. Additionally, the book explains the class distinction in philology, literature, linguistics, comedies, opera, ballads and dramas of ancient and modern times. It gives details of the historical and comparative philological terms as used in linguistics studies; the ways in which specific languages have developed and the ways in which languages in general can change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Operation Freak, Christian Flaugh embarks upon an exploration of the intricate connection between the physical bodies and narratives that, subjected to all manner of operations, generate identity. The author spotlights such voluntary and involuntary acts to show how discourses of ability, disability, and bodily manipulation regularly influence the production in and of various Francophone texts. Flaugh's foundation is the critical examination of mutually-informing narratives: Francophone novels that hyperbolically signal normative discourses through quintessential "freaks" (monstres) such as the Siamese twin, the bearded lady, and the exotic witch; and the related sociocultural master narratives from North America, North Africa, and the Caribbean. Employing disability and freak culture theories alongside studies of identification and narrative, Flaugh's close readings move beyond polarized discussions of "disabled" and "non-disabled" bodies. They expand such discussions to articulate how ability - like identity and narrative - is impermanent. It passes and it is passed throughout a spectrum at the same time that it intersects regularly with various narratives of identity like citizenship, gender, and race. Each chapter reveals how "operation" is a profit-driven identification process informed by abilities and constantly reproduced by surgeons, slave masters, writers, and the "freak" protagonists themselves. An unflinching look at such manipulation, Operation Freak illustrates the undeniably visceral relation between bodily ability, identity, narrative, and normality carved onto the body of the freak of culture (monstre de la culture).
