Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are 27 million slaves living in the world today—more than at any time in history. Three hundred thousand of them are impoverished children in Haiti, who "stay with" families as unpaid and uneducated domestic workers, subject to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. This practice, known locally as restavek ("staying with"), is so widespread that one in ten Haitian children is caught up in this form of slavery. Jean-Robert Cadet was a restavek in Haiti from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. He told the harrowing story of his youth in Restavec: From Haitian Slave Child to Middle-Class American—a landmark book that exposed ongoing child slavery in Haiti. Now in My Stone of Hope, Cadet continues his story from his early attempts to adjust to freedom in American society to his current life mission of eliminating child slavery through advocacy and education. As he recounts his own struggles to surmount the psychological wounds of slavery, Cadet puts a human face on the suffering that hundreds of thousands of Haitians still endure daily. He also builds a convincing case that child slavery is not just one among many problems that Haiti faces as the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation. Rather, he argues that the systematic abuse of so many of its children is Haiti's fundamental problem, because it creates damaged adults who seem incapable of governing the country justly or managing its economy productively. For everyone concerned about the fate of Haiti, the welfare of children, and the freedom of people around the globe, My Stone of Hope sounds an irresistible call to action.

Each of us comes to understand, often only gradually over the decades, how some influences from our earlier life have affected us. Some will have been inspiring. Some will have given us direct models of how to behave or how not to behave. Indeed, it is often the case that the deeper an influence turns out to have been, in the long run, the less likely it is that we noticed it at the time it was happening. For this reason, it has become necessary to find the time to reflect on and express gratitude for the institutions that helped form who we are and the work that we do. This collection of essays explores the impact of one institution on twenty-five participants, twenty-five years after we worked together. The Institution was Liverpool Hope University College and is now Liverpool Hope University. By telling and reflecting on our stories, we aim to encourage others to think about their own experiences and, ultimately, our earnest hope is that a greater awareness of this aspect of university life will help to transform our collective understanding of the nature of universities in particular, and of communities, institutions, or societies in general. But there was something special about belonging to a community called Hope.

Are you ready to believe it? Do you think you can really trust God's plan for your life—no matter what your life looks like right now? In this six-session video Bible study (DVD/video streaming not included), dynamic Bible teacher Megan Fate Marshman will take you through an engaging exploration of the significance of Jeremiah 29:11-14. Through interactive Bible study exercises, you will discover how to stop discounting yourself from a hopeful future, start living in active dependence on God, and find your way to the good plan He has for you. In this beloved passage of Scripture, Megan reveals how to trust God in your daily life and, more importantly, how to trust God's definition of good above your own. You will discover: Your not-enoughness is exactly enough for God, and that in fact, you have everything you need to take that first step into the life God has for you. How to stop counting yourself out because Jesus never has. God is up to something really good, and He's inviting you to join Him. How to hear and respond to God's voice, and intentionally grow a personal, intimate relationship with Him. How to defeat anxiety, trust God with all you're carrying and worrying about, and experience a life of freedom in relying on God daily. Designed for use with the Meant for Good Video Study available on DVD or streaming video, sold separately.
