Book excerpt: Super star clusters (SSCs) are important sources of energy, ionizing photons, and metals in galaxies. With masses of 100,000-1,000,000 M , SSCs have the mass necessary to create O and B stars as well as to form globular clusters. Despite their overall importance, little is known about how SSCs form, evolve, and affect their environments. In my thesis, I use submillimeter tracers of gas and its kinematics from the newly commissioned Atacama Large (Sub)Millimeter Array (ALMA) as well as the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to study SSCs, their associated gas and dust and feedback from young stars in two local dwarf galaxies, NGC 5253 and II Zw 40. In II Zw 40, we find a low gas-to-dust ratio (GTD) of ~70 in a cloud near a SSC, whereas we find GTD>270 in an isolated cloud with no associated star formation

Book excerpt: The injection of energy and momentum into the interstellar medium by young massive stars' intense radiation fields and their fast, radiatively driven winds can have a profound influence on their formation and environment. Massive star forming regions are rare and highly obscured, making the early moments of their formation difficult to observe. Instead, we must turn to theory to elucidate the physics involved in the formation of massive stars and massive star clusters (MSCs), which can host thousands of massive stars. In my thesis, I developed analytical and numerical techniques to study the formation of massive stars and how stellar wind feedback affects the dynamics of gas that surrounds MSCs. To estimate the initial rotation rates of massive stars at birth, I developed a protostellar angular momentum evolution model for accreting protostars to determine if magnetic torques can spin down massive stars during their formation. I found that magnetic torques are insufficient to spin down massive stars due to their short formation times and high accretion rates. Radiation pressure is likely the dominate feedback mechanism regulating massive star formation. Therefore detailed simulation of the formation of massive stars requires an accurate treatment of radiation. For this purpose, I developed a new, highly accurate radiation algorithm that properly treats the absorption of the direct radiation field from stars and the re-emission and processing by interstellar dust. With this new tool, I performed a suite of three-dimensional adaptive mesh refinement radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the formation of massive stars from collapsing massive pre-stellar cores. I found that mass is channeled to the massive star via dense infalling filaments that are uninhibited by radiation pressure and gravitational and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. To determine the importance of stellar wind feedback in young MSCs, I used observations to constrain a range of kinetic energy loss channels for the hot gas produced by the shock-heating of stellar winds to explain the low X-ray luminosities observed in Hii regions. I demonstrated that the energy injected by stellar winds is not a significant contributor to stellar feedback in young MSCs.

These proceedings provide a comprehensive overview of mass loss in massive stars and of the dynamical fate of clusters. The dynamical evolution of clusters is affected by stellar winds, mass loss outbursts and supernova explosions as well as by the loss of stars in dynamical interactions, thus linking the two central themes of the workshop. It is becoming clear that mass loss by radiation pressure on spectral lines is not only at work in normal O, B, and A stars but also in Luminous Blue Variables and Wolf-Rayet stars. The importance of these line-driven winds relative to outbursts in the Luminous Blue Variable phase of evolution is under debate. A central issue in this discussion is the importance of small and possibly large scale structure in stellar winds and its implications for the measured mass loss rates. These proceedings report on progress establishing wind properties, on theoretical predictions of mass loss and wind structure as a function of stellar properties, and on the effects of mass loss on the evolution of massive stars. As a result of dynamical interactions, clusters may dissolve completely over time. Observational studies of cluster dissolution timescales as a function of cluster formation history and cluster and environmental properties, are at the focus of cluster studies in the last decade. A key topic discussed in this book is whether the old globular clusters we observe today were once similar to present-day massive young clusters. The mass function of the two types of clusters is observed to be different. Is this a result of dynamical evoltuion or were the mass functions different at formation? Book excerpt: This thesis is focused on the role of stellar clusters of pre-main sequence (PMS)low-mass stars in the mechanisms leading to the formation of massive stars. We study the young low-mass stellar population in three nearby massive star-forming regions: Orion, DR21 and Monoceros R2. The characterization of this population is a challenge because it is usually still deeply embedded in the parental molecular cloud. Large amounts of dust and gas produce high extinctions that prevent their detection in the optical and even in the near-infrared (IR) wavelengths. Only X-ray,radio/(sub)millimeter and very deep IR observations are able to penetrate into the massive star cradles and reveal the low-mass stellar population. Thus, we use the X-ray catalogs provided by the space telescope Chandra, complementing them with deep IR surveys. We study the properties of the low-mass stellar population (such as the spatial distribution, the clustering, the stellar densities, the extinction distribution or the evolutionary phase) and discuss which massive star formation scenario better agrees with our results.Additionally, with the aim of better understanding both the properties of the members of these young clusters and the molecular environment of massive star cradles,we carry out new Very Large Array (VLA) radio continuum multi-epoch observations of Orion, and new Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the central region of Monoceros R2.To assess the impact of outflow feedback, we study the role of the outflow-driven turbulence in two clusters of outflows embedded in massive star-forming regions, such as the Orion OMC1-S region and the central region of Monoceros R2.
