Book excerpt: With the initiation of new economic policy in 1991 and subsequent reforms process, India has witnessed a change in the flow and direction of foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country. This is mainly due to the removal of restrictive and regulated practices. Foreign direct investment in India increased from US $ 129 millions in 1991-92 to US $ 40,885 million in March, 2005, an increase of about 316.9 times. However, the country is far behind in comparison to some of the developing countries like China. In so far as growth trend of FDI is concerned, there has been quite impressive growth of FDI inflow into the country during this period. However, negative growth rate is noticed during the period 1998-2000 primarily due to falling share of major investor countries, steep fall of approval by 55.7% in 1998 compared to 1997 and slackening of fresh equity. However, traditional industrial sectors like food processing industries, textiles, etc. which were once important sectors attracting larger FDI, have given way to modern industrial sectors like electronics and electrical equipments, etc. In this paper analysis on the factors affecting potentiality and challenges of FDI in the country is discussed and open a room for future discussion.

Book excerpt: India's policy regarding foreign direct investment (FDI) during the post-Independence period can be broadly classified into four distinct phases: (a) cautious non-discrimination in controls during the period 1948 to mid/late 1960s; (b) selective restrictions and controls from the mid/late 1960s to the end of 1970s with the promulgation of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA), 1973 and the Industrial Licensing Policy, 1973; (c) gradual and partial liberalisation in the 1980s with special incentives for investment in export-oriented units; and (d) full-fledged liberalization regarding foreign investment along with medium-term adjustments and long-term structural reforms since 1991. Over the past few years, India has become an attractive destination for foreign investment owing, among other factors, to its large and rapidly growing consumer market, a developed commercial banking network, availability of skilled manpower and a package of fiscal incentives for foreign investors. In spite of the fact that India is strategically located with access to a vast domestic and South Asian market, its share in the world's total flow of direct investment to developing countries is relatively low. China, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand attract greater amounts of foreign investment than India. The current world scenario calls for further liberalization of norms for foreign investment by present and prospective foreign entrepreneurs. The present book deals with almost all aspects of FDI in India. It particularly focuses on current policies, conditions and procedures for FDI in-flows into India. In the World Bank's Doing Business Report, 2015, India was placed at 142 among 189 countries in terms of ease of doing business. India ranked even below Pakistan which occupied 128th rank and much below China which secured 90th rank. Encouragingly, India was ranked at 130 in the 2017 Report and at 100 and 77 in the 2018 and 2019 Reports respectively. Presently, it is the highest-ranked South Asian country.
