Book excerpt: Taking place six months after the events in MY FRENCH REBEL, this sweeping tale is set against the backdrop of the events taking place in the spring of 1777. From the occupation of the capital city of Philadelphia by the British army and the departure of Lord Howe, through the battle of Barren Hill, Charlotte Burington's unrequited love for the Marquis de Lafayette compels her actions, forcing her to choose between the life she has known and a future that, though honorable, must be lived alone. THE FLOWERING THORN is a tale of past sins remembered and present ones overlooked, of greed and a deep seated need for revenge.

Book excerpt: A Jazz Age socialite impulsively adopts an orphaned boy in this humorous, heartwarming tale In 1929 London, twenty-eight-year-old Lesley Frewen lives a privileged, cultured life. But one thing is missing: love. When her aunt’s female companion suddenly dies, leaving behind a young son, Lesley decides on a whim to adopt four-year-old Patrick—though she doesn’t have any particular affection for children. As soon as Patrick moves in with her, Lesley gets to work using her connections to enroll him in the finest boys’ school. But she quickly discovers London is no place to raise a child, and they relocate to the tiny village of High Westover. The hamlet boasts a post office, a church, and a vicarage. There’s an apple orchard and children for Patrick to play with. However, the country comes with its own set of daunting challenges: Lesley can’t imagine how she’ll entertain her friends there! But ultimately life with Patrick will change her, bringing out her capacity to love and showing her the difference between pleasure and happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Thorn of Glastonbury is the stuff that legends are made of. Stories grow on it like fruit and wrap around it like creepers. It’s a shape-shifter. It’s been Catholic, Protestant, Pagan, universal. It’s succoured royalty, loyalty, defiance and subversion. It’s been condemned as patriarchal and revered as a feminine spirit. It’s been harnessed by imperialists and peacemakers and nationalists and universalists. It’s stood for better times and better days. For Christmas cheer and better nature, for all trees and all nature, for peace and for hope. This book is the biography of a symbol. “surely the definitive work on its beloved and important subject” Ronald Hutton "permanently changes our understanding of the mutable mythos without undermining our heart-felt connection to it" Paul Weston "a gem of historical writing" Maria Nita, Material Religion "a coherent and gripping narrative" Charles Watkins, Journal of Historical Geography "If you care about Glastonbury's history, and the origins of its legends, you need this book" Yuri Leitch "utterly accessible, written with flow and humour, zest and zeal" Johanna van Fessem, Glastonbury Oracle "a fusion of critical acumen and human sympathy" Jeremy Harte, Fortean Times "an amazing story unfolds from a hugely impressive mass of sources" Robert Dunning, The Local Historian Adam Stout is a writer and historian, and has been a Visiting Research Fellow at the Universities of Wales, Leicester, Exeter and Southampton. He has written and lectured widely on the idea of Glastonbury.

Book excerpt: Developments in garden art cannot be isolated from the social changes upon which they either depend or have some bearing. Bourgeois and Aristocratic Cultural Encounters in Garden Art, 1550 - 1850 offers an unparalleled opportunity to discover how complex relationships between bourgeois and aristocrats have led to developments in garden art from the Renaissance into the Industrial Revolution, irrespective of stylistic differences. These essays show how garden creation has contributed to the blurring of social boundaries and to the ongoing redefinition of the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy. Also illustrated is the aggressive use of gardens by bourgeois in more-or-less successful attempts at subverting existing social hierarchies in renaissance Genoa and eighteenth-century Bristol, England; as well as the opposite, as demonstrated by the king of France, Louis XIV, who claimed to rule the arts, but imitated the curieux fleuristes, a group of amateurs from diverse strata of French society. Essays in this volume explore this complex framework of relationships in diverse settings in Britain, France, Biedermeier Vienna, and renaissance Genoa. The volume confirms that gardens were objects of conspicuous consumption, but also challenges the theories of consumption set forth by Thorstein Veblen and Pierre Bourdieu, and explores the contributions of gardens to major cultural changes like the rise of public opinion, gender and family relationships, and capitalism. Garden history, then, informs many of the debates of contemporary cultural history, ranging from rural management practices in early seventeenth-century France to the development of a sense of British pride at the expansive Vauxhall Gardens favored equally by the legendary Frederick, Prince of Wales, and by the teeming London masses. This volume amply demonstrates the varied and extensive contributions of garden creation to cultural exchange between 1550 and 1850. -- Publisher's description.
