Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FLI (Friends of Legacy and Intrigue) Reveals Lost Family Found is a story about finding family history hidden for almost a century. FLI is a mysterious group that has decided to enlighten the narrator’s Filipino niece, Jets, and wife, Gemma, to previously unknown family from Germany descent. FLI provide clues that eventually take them to the archdiocese archives where two journals are revealed. The problem is that church and government consider the journals too controversial for public release, let alone to possible descendants. FLI is very influential, pressing the archbishop and others to release the information. The first journal was written by Sara, who laments over a family secret involving a queen from the mid-1800s. The second journal is written by her son, Aaron, who continues their story detailing his struggles from 1930 to 1945 in Germany. The investigations FLI lead Jets, Gemma, and their companions on quests to find the truth and fate of family during World War II are difficult, painful, and satisfying. In the end, they are left with more to find and a single piece of a puzzle that will not be fully understood until all adventures are successfully completed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early days of television, well before most households had a set, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has been handing out honors for the industry's best efforts. Now fans can read about their favorites--and perhaps rediscover some forgotten pleasures--in this reference to prime time and nighttime Emmy winners. Beginning with the heated charade contest known as Pantomime Quiz, which won Most Popular Program of 1948 in the first Emmy Awards ceremony (held in 1949), each of more than 100 winning shows gets star treatment with an entry that includes the year of award or awards, air times, hosts, guests, casts and a full discussion of the show's history and run. Many of the entries include original interviews with cast or crew members. With such rich information, each show's entry constitutes a chapter in the history of television through the story of the show and the people who made it happen. The best of variety, drama, game shows, comedies, adventures and many more categories are featured. An appendix offers interesting facts and figures and ranks shows according to such statistics as longest run, longest delay from debut to win, and most Emmys won.

Book excerpt: Bone Cancer: Bone Sarcomas and Bone Metastases - From Bench to Bedside, Third Edition comprehensively investigates key discoveries in the field of bone biology. New aspects of bone cancer biology are treated in new chapters covering exosomes, autophagy, and metabolism. These have led to the development of entirely new areas for investigation, such as therapies which combine surgery and biological approaches. The Third Edition expands on the original overview of bone cancer development (physiology and pathophysiology), with 40% new material. Each chapter has been written by internationally recognized specialists on the bone cancer microenvironment, bone metastases, osteoclast biology in bone cancer, proteomics, bone niche, circulating tumor cells, and clinical trials. Given the global prevalence of breast and prostate cancers, knowledge of bone biology has become essential for everyone within the medical and cancer research communities. Bone Cancer: Bone Sarcomas and Bone Metastases - From Bench to Bedside continues to offer the only translational reference to cover all aspects of primary bone cancer and bone metastases. This revision opens the door to myeloma with two short chapters dedicated to this bone-associated disease. Covers the broad field of bone sarcomas and bone metastases from basic research to clinical approaches Presents comprehensive and translational overview of biological and clinical aspects of bone cancers, discussing pathophysiology from genetic and molecular levels using the most recent evidence Provides a common language for cancer researchers, bone biologists, oncologists, and radiologists to discuss bone tumors and how bone cancer metastases affects each major organ system Offers insights to research clinicians (oncologists and radiologists) into understanding the molecular basis of bone cancer, leading to more well-informed diagnoses and treatment of tumors and metastases Offers insights to bone biologists into how clinical observations and practices can feed back into the research cycle and, therefore, can contribute to the development of more targeted genomic and proteomic assays

Book excerpt: To paraphrase silent movie queen Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's classic 1950 film Sunset Boulevard, "The epic miniseries are big! It's television that got small!" This is especially true when one compares such iconic epic miniseries as Rich Man, Poor Man (1976), Roots (1977), Holocaust (1978), Shogun (1980), The Winds of War (1983), War and Remembrance (1988-89) and Angels in America (2003) to today's ordinary television programming. This work traces the historical trajectory of the epic miniseries and delves into the character archetypes and themes that recur in the genre, giving close critical attention to more than 40 miniseries. A filmography is included.
