Book excerpt: Despite its many benefits, religion can be a source of internal struggle. God seems to be distant or punishing. People feel anger toward God in the face of life events, particularly experiences connected with suffering, injustice, and personal disappointments. The study focuses on three types of religious struggle: guilt and fear of not being forgiven by God, negative emotions toward God, and negative social interactions related to religion. The study examines the predictors and consequences of struggle in the context of psychological well-being. The following issues are addressed: dependence of struggle from personality traits, parental attitudes, humility, and religiosity, relationships of struggles with the indicators of wellbeing in the general population, and people coping with stress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book investigates the long-term preconditions of lasting and successful democratization. It counters conventional wisdom that they are a matter of proper institutional design, or that the political culture of democracy is a by-product of modernizing economic change. Instead, it argues that achieving lasting democracy is difficult without a prior breakthrough to individualism: a system of beliefs centered on the belief in one's inner worth and in one's inner capacity for judgment. The rise of an individualist belief system that is widely proliferated in society requires social conditions that are in turn hard to meet, including a widespread breakdown of traditional culture, a frontier experience, and a process of civic nation building. The book's empirical focus, Poland, demonstrates the logic of the individuation process in a condensed form. Poland's road to individualism (and with it, to democracy) consisted of a catastrophic uprooting of broad segments of society in the aftermath of World War II, the rise of a frontier environment in the Western Territories acquired from Germany, and an unlikely emergence of the Catholic Church as a civic nation-builder in these Territories in the 1960s and the 1970s. However, the Polish case is not unique, and the book offers an analytical approach that could successfully be brought to bear on other cases of democratization, both past and present"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to 1939, when Poland came under German domination, it was the center of the European Jewish world, filled with a large Jewish population that had lived on Polish soil for over nine centuries, and developed a vibrant self-sustaining social and religious community culture. During the German occupation of World War II, close to 3 million Polish Jews were exterminated. Poland was where the Nazis established most of their ghettos and all death camps. It was where the railroad tracks converged, bringing hundreds of thousand Jews from the remotest corners of Europe to feed the Nazi death machine. Thousands of Poles risked their lives to save Jews by mostly sheltering them, while most others were passive onlookers, fearful for their lives to get involved, and too many others collaborated with the hated enemy in eliminating Jews. Mordecai Paldiel, a historian of the Holocaust, examines the important role Jews played in Poland in the years before Germans occupied the country. He also examines the antisemitism that existed in Poland before the Nazis arrived. Just as important, he highlights the various responses of Poles as witnesses of the German extermination of Jews, including the thousands who, in spite of the dangers to themselves, did their utmost to save Jews from the German-orchestrated Holocaust.
