Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Who was Marie Corelli?' shrieked the news headlines after she died in 1924, but no-one really knew. Her past was obscured by such a fog of lies and concealment that it was impossible to unravel. In the 1890s her novels were eagerly devoured by millions around the world, her readers ranging from Queen Victoria and Gladstone to the lowest of shop girls. It was known that the famous authoress had dined with the Prince of Wales, entertained Sarah Bernhardt and Ellen Terry, and even managed to split Stratford-upon-Avon into warring factions. In all she wrote thirty-one books, the majority of which were phenomenal bestsellers, in which she dealt intriguingly with the popular themes of the day, spiritualism, science, romance, transcendentalism and religion. At the height of her success Corelli was reputedly one of the most highly paid, and undoubtedly the best selling author in England. Yet the critics generally ignored her or belittled her work.Setting Corelli's story against the context of her time, it tells how she blazed into fame from nothing to become the bestselling novelist of her generation. Born around 1855, Marie, desperate to escape the shame of illegitimacy, had fabricated several different pasts, changed her name from Minnie Mackay to Marie Corelli and knocked fourteen years off her age. In 1886 she published her first novel, A Romance of Two Worlds and rapidly achieved success. In 1899, after a serious illness she moved to Stratford-upon-Avon with her devoted companion, Bertha Vyver. Here she became one of the first conservationists. She bestowed money on many worthy causes, but was constantly at war with the local council for her insistence on the preservation of the town's old houses. When she died in 1924 crowds gathered outside her home. The press - capitalising on her outstanding popularity - invented fantastic stories about her origins. The mystery of Marie Corelli, however, has never been solved. After her death she faded from public memory, but today she is once again being recognised for her extraordinary place in Victorian society and her remarkable ability to captivate the reading public of her era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Pushkin, the most distinguished poet of Russia, was born at Saint Petersburg, 1799. When only twenty-one years of age he entered the civil service in the department of foreign affairs. Lord Byron’s writings and efforts for Greek independence exercised great influence over Pushkin, whose “Ode to Liberty” cost him his freedom. He was exiled to Bessarabia [A region of Moldova and western Ukraine] from 1820 to 1825, whence he returned at the accession of the new emperor, Nicholas, who made him historiographer of Peter the Great. Pushkin’s friends now looked upon him as a traitor to the cause of liberty. It is not improbable that an enforced residence at the mouth of the Danube somewhat cooled his patriotic enthusiasm. Every Autumn, his favorite season for literary production, he usually passed at his country seat in the province Pekoff. Here from 1825 to 1829 he published “Pultowa,” “Boris Godunoff,” “Eugene Onegin,” and “Ruslaw and Ludmila,” a tale in verse, after the Manner of Ariosto’s “Orlando Furioso.” This is considered as the first great poetical work in the Russian language, though the critics of the day attacked it, because it was beyond their grasp; but the public devoured it.

Book excerpt: Marie-Antoinette is one of the most fascinating and controversial figures in all of French history. This volume explores the many struggles by various individuals and groups to put right Marie's identity, and it simultaneously links these struggles to larger destabilizations in social, political and gender systems in France. Looking at how Marie was represented in politics, art, literature and journalism, the contributors to this volume reveal how crucial political and cultural contexts were enacted "on the body of the queen" and on the complex identity of Marie. Taken together, these essays suggest that it is precisely because she came to represent the contradictions in the social, political and gender systems of her era, that Marie remains such an important historical figure.

Book excerpt: Winner of the French Heritage Literary Award A beguiling memoir of a childhood in 1950s France from the much-admired New York Times bestselling author of The Piano Shop on the Left Bank "Like the castle, [Carhart's] memoir imaginatively and smoothly integrates multiple influences, styles and whims."—The New York Times For a young American boy in the 1950s, Fontainebleau was a sight both strange and majestic, home to a continual series of adventures: a different language to learn, weekend visits to nearby Paris, family road trips to Spain and Italy. Then there was the château itself: a sprawling palace once the residence of kings, its grounds the perfect place to play hide-and-seek. The curiosities of the small town and the time with his family as expats left such an impression on him that thirty years later Carhart returned to France with his wife to raise their two children. Touring Fontainebleau again as an adult, he began to appreciate its influence on French style, taste, art, and architecture. Each trip to Fontainebleau introduces him to entirely new aspects of the château's history, enriching his memories and leading him to Patrick Ponsot, the head of the château’s restoration, who becomes Carhart’s guide to the hidden Fontainebleau. What emerges is an intimate chronicle of a time and place few have experienced. In warm, precise prose, Carhart reconstructs the wonders of his childhood as an American in postwar France, attending French schools with his brothers and sisters. His firsthand account brings to life nothing less than France in the 1950s, from the parks and museums of Paris to the rigors of French schooling to the vast château of Fontainebleau and its village, built, piece by piece, over many centuries. Finding Fontainebleau is for those captivated by the French way of life, for armchair travelers, and for anyone who has ever fallen in love with a place they want to visit over and over again.
