This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual, Field Manual FM 4-01 Army Transportation Operations April 2014, is the Army's doctrinal manual for transportation. It replaces FM 55-1. Its purpose is to provide authoritative doctrine for transportation operations that support unified land operations. This publication applies to the range of military operations and supports Army doctrine publication (ADP) 3-0, Unified Land Operations and ADP 4-0, Sustainment. It also expounds on transportation doctrine that is introduced in ADP 4-0. The intent of this FM is to support strategic and operational reach, and enable endurance. This FM also establishes how transportation operations are integrated and synchronized into the overall operations process - plan, prepare, execute, and assess. Transportation is identified as a sub-element of logistics in the Sustainment Warfighting Function The principle audience for FM 4-01 is all members of the profession of arms. Commanders and staffs of Army headquarters serving as joint task force or multinational headquarters should also refer to applicable joint or multinational doctrine concerning the range of military operations and joint or multinational forces. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication. Commanders, staffs, and subordinates ensure that their decisions and actions comply with applicable U.S., international, and, in some cases host-nation laws and regulations. Commanders at all levels ensure their Soldiers operate in accordance with the law of war and the rules of engagement. (See FM 27-10.) FM 4-01 uses joint terms where applicable. Selected joint and Army terms and definitions appear in both the glossary and the text. Terms for which FM 4-01 is the proponent publication (the authority) are italicized in the text and are marked with an asterisk (*) in the glossary. Terms and definitions for which FM 4-01 is the proponent publication are boldfaced in the text. For other definitions shown in the text, the term is italicized and the number of the proponent publication follows the definition. FM 4-01 applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and the United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated. The U.S. Army Transportation Corps provides an overwhelming capability for Army and joint forces in achieving operational reach, freedom of action and prolonged endurance. Army transportation, combined with strategic enablers, delivers to the Combatant Commander expeditionary capabilities. At the foundation is the Defense Transportation System (DTS) which is that portion of the Nation's transportation infrastructure that supports the DOD transportation needs in peace and war (JP 4-01). When these needs exceed the Service's lift capabilities, commercial industry supports the DOD with contracts and agreements such as the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) and the Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement. The Civil Reserve Air Fleet is a program in which the DOD contracts for the services of specific aircraft, owned by a U.S. entity or citizen, during national emergencies and defense-oriented situations when expanded civil augmentation of military airlift activity is required (JP 3-17). The Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement is an agreement that provides the DOD with assured access to United States flag assets, both vessel capacity and intermodal systems, to meet DOD contingency requirements (JP 4-01.2). These commercial assets help to sustain the projection of combat power in support of unified land operations U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), a strategic provider, resources and allocates sealift and airlift to support the combatant commanders. This is accomplished by USTRANSCOM's Service components; Air Mobility Command (AMC), Military Sealift Command (MSC) and Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC).

Book excerpt: Field Manual FM 4-40 Quartermaster Operations Change 1 April 2014 describes Quartermaster operations at all levels to include supply and field service functions. By reading this FM, commanders, staffs, and Soldiers will have an understanding of Quartermaster mission, organizations, and functions and will be better prepared to exercise them in an operational environment. More importantly, this field manual serves as the bridge between this force and the next, discussing units and systems that are being fielded now and into the near future, including Global Combat Support System - Army(GCSS-Army). While Army transformation to modularity is complete, our evolution will continue as we adjust the Army to new design for the Army of 2020. To support our force, we must focus ourselves on this new environment and apply the same innovation and professionalism that make us successful.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Transportation Corps provides an overwhelming capability for Army and joint forces in achieving operational reach, freedom of action and prolonged endurance. Army transportation, combined with strategic enablers, delivers to the Combatant Commander expeditionary capabilities. Introductory figure-1 depicts the strategic to tactical transportation system. It illustrates transportation agencies, organizations, and commands that deploy forces; distribute personnel and materiel; sustain forces for extended durations; and redeploy/retrograde forces and materiel upon mission completion. At the foundation is the Defense Transportation System (DTS) which is that portion of the Nation's transportation infrastructure that supports the DOD transportation needs in peace and war (JP 4-01). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual describes the organizations, processes, procedures, and systems involved in the control of movements across the military spectrum. The focus of this manual is for the reader to gain an understanding of the movement control system and how it functions from the strategic to the tactical level. It focuses on the planning, controlling, and managing of the use of available modes of transport to move units, equipment, and materiel. It also describes transportation request procedures, container operations, and how transportation resources are controlled and managed. The Chief of Staff of the Army has mandated that the Army be able to move a combat capable brigade anywhere in the world within 96 hours. To put a viable combat capability on the ground anywhere in the world in this time frame will require effective movement control. This manual remains consistent with Army operations, logistics doctrine, and concepts currently published or in the process of being published. However, the reader is cautioned that logistics doctrine is changing - and changing rapidly. The on-going efforts to reduce the Army logistics footprint and move to the Objective Force will require doctrinal change. Users acting within the scope of their authority may vary from this doctrine in this manual when such variation will result in improved operations. The Army's environmental strategy into the 21st century defines its philosophy and commitment in protecting and preserving the environment and natural resources for present and future generations. Sound environmental practices and considerations must be integrated into all Army documents, missions, and operations. In keeping with the Army's vision to be a national leader in environmental stewardship, commanders and leaders must ensure that all local, state, federal, and host nation laws and regulations pertaining to the environment are included in the planning process and followed to an extent consistent with operational considerations.

Book excerpt: This manual provides standards for the execution of Army transportation functions in support of military operations. It reflects the shift to joint operations, prompted by the 1986 Goldwater- Nichols Act. It presents the transportation doctrine commanders require to integrate the Army's transportation capability with the capabilities of other Services and the DTS. This doctrine applies when executing missions throughout the full range of military operations, including OOTW. It is also applicable regardless of the size of the Army force involved in an operation. The manual portrays the Army transportation system as a basic element of warfighting. It uses the strategic, operational, and tactical levels of war to frame the system. Because the system is controlled by different commands throughout the levels, this manual describes procedures commanders should follow to establish a seamless total distribution system. The system links all Army installations, to include forts, camps, mobilization stations, and depots to fighting positions. This manual uses the functions of a transportation system to present the Army transportation capabilities. These elements are movements control, terminal operations, and mode operations. The primary users of this manual are ASCC and their staffs. The manual is also useful to senior Army, joint service and allied officers serving as joint/combined force commanders or staff officers, and noncommissioned officers. It also contains guidance to handle the requirements generated by other governmental and non-governmental agencies, as well as HN elements, involved in the operation. Moreover, the manual is designed to assist other Service component commanders in their understanding of the Army's transportation capability. Finally, all military leaders will find this manual useful in their general professional education. This manual implements pertinent doctrine from joint publications. These publications include Joint Pub 4.0, Joint Pub 4.01.1, Joint Pub 4.01.2, Joint Pub 4.01.3, and Joint Pub 4.01.5. It is fully compatible with the Army doctrine contained in FM 100-5 and supports the contents of FM 100-7, FM 100-8, FM 100-10, and FM 100-16. This manual also recognizes the doctrine contained in FM 100-17 and FM 100-19.
