Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first modern study of the Fellowship of Merchant Adventurers - England's most important trading company of the sixteenth century - in its final century of existence as a privileged organisation. Over this period, the Company's main trade, the export of cloth to northwest Europe, was overshadowed by rising traffic with the wider world, whilst its privileges were continually criticised in an era of political revolution. But the Company and its membership were not passive victims of these changes; rather, they were active participants in the commercial and political dramas of the century. Using thousands of neglected private merchant papers, Fellowship and Freedom views the Company from the perspective of its members, in the process bringing to life the complex social worlds of early modern merchants. For members, 'freedom' meant not just the right to access a privileged market, but also to trade independently, which could conflict with the 'fellowship' of corporate affiliation, and the responsibilities to the collective that it entailed. The study's major theme is the challenge of maintaining corporate unity in the face of this and other pressures that the Company faced. It restores the centrality of the Merchant Adventurers within three important historical narratives: England's transition from the margins to the centre of the European, and later global, economy; the rise and fall of the merchant corporation as a major form of commercial government in premodern Europe; and the political history of the corporation in an era of state formation and revolution.

We men all run the same race and stumble along the same bumps and potholes; however, we isolate ourselves from one another, pretending everything is OK. Christian men are falling. Many men in our local churches are currently on the fast track toward destruction. Many are trapped in self-made cages, hiding themselves in darkness, hoping no one sees where they really are, and at the same time earnestly desiring for someone to set them free. But we dont talk about these things. The Church must take drastic measures, but what can we do, and what should we do? Journey to Freedom offers an answer: authentic fellowship. Its missing among so many Christian men in so many of our churches today. What is authentic fellowship? What does it look like? And where in Scripture can we see it in action? Find out how you can experience biblical, authentic fellowship in your life. Start your journey to freedom right now!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freedom and Fellowship in Religion: A Collection of Essays and Addresses Hat religion Still occupies the thoughts of men as a great human concern need not be argued. It may be said to occupy them as it never did in times when it claimed an interest on grounds of its own, Wholly separate from other human affairs. The relig ious question now makes a part of every question. There is scarcely a concern of any moment in which religion does not hold a conspicuous rank. It is de bated in the highest places; it is the business of empires; it occupies the thoughts of princes and administrators; politicians make account of it; statesmen and dema gogues alike take bearings from it. It haunts the sci entific mind; literature cannot leave it unrecognized; philosophy finds it mingling in all its problems. The social questions that vex our age address themselves to it less directly indeed, but no less earnestly, than of Old. They who talk of the declining interest in religion can not be close Observers of the times. The forms the interest takes may have Changed, but the interest was never so vital before. The religious aspect certainly has changed. The theological epoch draws near its close. Fifteen years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
