Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 354: Inspection and Management of Bridges with Fracture-Critical Details explores the inspection and maintenance of bridges with fracture-critical members (FCMs), as defined in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications. The report identifies gaps in literature related to the subject; determines practices and problems with how bridge owners define, identify, document, inspect, and manage bridges with fracture-critical details; and identifies specific research needs. Among the areas examined in the report are inspection frequencies and procedures; methods for calculating remaining fatigue life; qualification, availability, and training of inspectors; cost of inspection programs; instances where inspection programs prevented failures; retrofit techniques; fabrication methods and inspections; and experience with fracture-critical members fractures and problems details.

This indicates the need for more information on fatigue and brittle fracture of riveted bridges. This book unveils extensive research and literature results on riveted bridges' fatigue live and shows how to take fatigue properly i

Book excerpt: The brittle fracture of the Hoan Bridge in December 2000 highlighted the fracture susceptibility of details containing intersecting welds in steel bridges. Though it is now known that details with intersecting welds should be avoided, many existing bridges in Indiana contain details with intersecting welds. Little experimental data on the fatigue performance of these details exists. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fatigue strength of several details commonly found in steel bridges in Indiana that contain intersecting welds. Large-scale experimental fatigue testing were performed using nine steel beams to study the behavior of three basic types of welded details: a vertical stiffener, a horizontal stiffener terminating near a vertical stiffener, and a horizontal gusset plate coped to fit around a vertical stiffener. The welded details in this study were fabricated with varying degrees of web gap, defined as the distance between perpendicular weld toes. The results of the experimental testing were examined and compared to prior testing to determine if the size of the web gap affected the fatigue strength. Furthermore, the performance of drilled hole retrofits used to extend the fatigue life of these details was studied. Within the scope of the fatigue testing program, the presence of intersecting welds was not found to significantly affect the fatigue strength of vertical stiffener and horizontal gusset details. However, the size of the web gap may have had an effect on the fatigue strength of details where a horizontal stiffener terminated near a vertical stiffener. Further experimental testing is needed to more clearly define the relationship between web gap and fatigue strength for this case. Drilled hole retrofits were successful at prolonging the lives of these details to varying degrees, but it should be noted that the stress redistribution resulting from these holes may cause fatigue cracking at nearby weld toes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current steel bridge design and evaluation practices assume that large inspection access holes, such as manhole and hand holes are presently classified as category D details. While category D is adequate for the fatigue evaluation of small open holes, such as an empty bolt holes, this has been shown to be overly conservative when the dimensions of the hole are larger. Specifically, the stress concentration of a hole decreases as the size of the hole relative to the size of the plate increases. In order to verify whether the reduction in stress concentration is significant enough to grant an improvement in the fatigue category, a parametric study using finite element analysis was conducted. The results of the parametric study revealed that larger holes may be reclassified as category C fatigue-prone details when certain geometrical features are met. To assist the implementation of the research findings, the current report also includes recommended modifications to the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification.
