Book excerpt: History of the Gilletts & my story. . . by default, this writing has come to me curse that graduate writing assistant at the University of Michigan in the fall of 1971 for suggesting that I could write I’ve struggled with it from the nod and probably before But she was cute... who else is going to delve back into the Gillett family Clan & write my memoir? It isn't my fault that family name is passed down from the male - just the way it's been firstborn Kay is matriarch of a large Catholic Family and celebrating 50 years of marriage to my Pollock brother-in-law second born Stan is continuing to lick his wounds from the Vietnam War fourth born in Lar newly retired and as usual, walking his life away I'm retired and have time to document and more importantly, have an interest in the shared-legacy that is ours inspired early Memorial Day 2019 I've no idea why It wakes me in the morin’...kicking my ass out of bed. This is basically for my sons - though they’ve never asked for it! It’s sorta chronologically organized; family…..me from whence we came to where we are A Gillett book (aunt Ginny covered the Miller's side of the family) I wrote a real book once, this isn’t it. Some writing within is borrowed (stolen) without citations! You’ll know it’s not mine by it’s correct punctuation & formality. It’s more important to get the info out rather than to own. I tend to be too consistent (I prefer ‘true’), so this lack of uniformity might keep this from being too boring. I’ll probably use a capital to start and a period at the end...everything else is off! I write the way I speak; in fits and starts, phrases, dangling things, slang . . . Some editing to help the clarity - to ‘clean up’ my appearance - if you don’t like it, don’t read! Even though I taught music for 41 years, this dribble isn’t about teaching. Thanks to Susan Hintz for invaluable researching.

Born to former slaves, Henry Harris worked his way from John Sparks's house hand to one of the most respected buckaroos in the region. Pete Itcaina, the unlikely millionaire, once bought a local bar on the spot just to fire the bartender, who mistook Itcaina for a bum and refused to serve him. The beautiful cattle rustler Susie Raper charmed her way out of numerous arrests and trials, despite her trail of dead husbands. Local author Claudia Wines excavates sagas buried in the dust and probes conventional wisdom surrounding local legend.

Book excerpt: An immigrant woman reflects on her past in Germany before, during, and after World War II, as well as finding love, family, and a future in America. This is the remarkable life story of Anna Burkardt McKay, who was born in Germany before WWII and who moved to the United States as an American war bride in 1947 to raise a family on a small cattle ranch in Nevada. Through a childhood in Hochst, Germany, where fond memories mingle with remembrances of the horrors of the Second World War’s beginning; into a young adulthood, filled with terrors of the escape and evasion of Nazi youth work camps; through falling in love and immigrating to the United States to marry, and later have a family, this is Anna’s Story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shawn Hall's immensely popular guidebooks to Nevada ghost towns have become essential resources for backcountry explorers and scholars alike. Now Hall returns to Elko County to survey the county's railroad and stage stations, as well as other sites not included in his earlier survey of this colorful section of the state. As in his earlier volumes, Hall includes a history of each site he lists, along with period and contemporary photographs, directions for locating the sites, and an assessment of their present condition. His historical accounts, based on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, are both scholarly and engaging, rich in anecdotes and personalities, and in the fascinating minutia of history often ignored by more academic writers. Shawn Hall's dedication to documenting Nevada's thousands of historic sites has enriched our knowledge of the state's relatively brief but very eventful past. Connecting the West is a worthy addition to Hall's remarkable efforts to preserve the state's history.
