Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family Names and Their Story Mr. M. A. Lower was the first in modern times to break ground in the domain of family nomenclature - in 1842, when he published his first edition of "English Surnames." There were in it many mistakes, and the work was tentative. A better book of his was "Patronymica Britannica," a dictionary of family names that appeared in 1860. But the share of scientific research first entered the soil with Canon Isaac Taylor's "Words and Places," 1864. Since then there have been various works on the subject, some good, some bad, some instructive, others misleading; there have been treatises on Irish and Scottish, and on particular county names. Mr. R. Ferguson, in his "English Surnames and their Place in the Teutonic Family," 1858, and "Surnames as a Science," 1883, and "The Teutonic Name-System applied to Family Names in France, England, and Germany," 1864, went too far in deriving most surnames from Teutonic roots, led thereto by Forstemann's "Altdeutsches Namenbuch" (Nordhausen, 1856), a vast work that has been condensed by Heintze in "Die Deutschen Familiennamen" (Halle, 1882). Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Surnames, and Their Place in the Teutonic Family In the investigation of this subject tradition gives us little or no assistance. Not but that there are many traditions as to the origin of names, but in almost all cases they are worth less and delusive. Indeed it is rather curious how tradition, in matters of history so often substantially correct, in matters of etymology is generally sheer invention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal and Family Names: A Popular Monograph on the Origin and History of the Nomenclature of the Present and Former Times About the year 1856 my attention was specially directed to the study of personal names, and circumstances at that time led me to concentrate attention upon this field of literature. Having laboured therein for the period of about fourteen years, the result was produced in a work entitled "The Names We Bear." So little did I expect my book to take the market that it was brought out privately. Howbeit, the edition of two thousand copies was not long in the hands of readers when a succession of complimentary critiques and encouraging notices began to flow in from both sides of the Atlantic. Frequent applications for the work from far and near induced me to put forth extra exertions to produce a work yet more worthy of the subject and of our times. After thirteen years additional labour thereat, I venture to come before the public again as an author and to ask the patronage of the general community. This may be regarded as an entirely new work, being rewritten throughout, and in extent exceeding the previous volume by about one-half. Much study is but an effort to make the past present. What else does the Historian, whether in ordinary prose or in epic poem? the Geologist, when unfolding the stony pages of primary deposits? the Dramatist, if presenting the lives and actions of the heroic dead, than revivify past ages, or rather, re-present the illustrious departed, whose memory man treasures? Educated men cannot rest while the past remains unveiled. My book is a tiny effort to reproduce the great actors of past generations in greater numbers than history can take cognisance of. Much of this work refers to periods when as yet the history of nations, passed under review, was unwritten. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surname Book and Racial History The students of the Genealogical Society of Utah and of the Relief Society have been greatly in need of a reference book from which to prepare lessons in the study of Surnames. Two years ago the General Board of the Relief Society prepared a year's course in the study of Surnames, expecting to use Baring-Gould's "Story of Family Names" as a text book. We soon exhausted the edition and no other surname book was on the market. A number have been printed, but all are now out of print, so far as is known. As a consequence, this book has been prepared by appointment through the General Board of the Relief Society, and will serve, it is hoped, as a fairly complete reference and text book for our students and friends. No originality is claimed for the work from the general line of books thus far published, unless the choice of extracts and the arrangement of the chapters may prove somewhat unusual. The surname books heretofore published presupposed on the part of the student familiar acquaintance with history and philology; while most of them are purely technical. Our aim has been to begin our study with some acquaintance with the brief racial and historical information required by the ordinary student, who takes up his genealogical studies in the subject of the evolution of surnames as we know them today. Especially do we inquire into tribal and racial beginnings. The matter given concerning Hindu pedigrees and name customs first appears here, and will both enlighten and interest students of surname beginnings. Quotations are freely made in these pages from the historians who have prepared material for the Encyclopedia Britannica, from Myers, Fisher, McCabe, Green, Freeman and Macaulay. Copious extracts are taken from Lower, Yonge, Guppy, Bardsley and S. Baring-Gould, also from Professor O. J. P. Widtsoe's "Introduction to the Study of English Surnames," which was published in the Utah Genealogical and Historical Magazine. Credit may not always be attached to each little extract, but we hereby acknowledge our indebtedness to all of these noted authorities. The inevitable religious trend which is given to all statements and studies by the Latter-day Saints, whenever stating facts or conclusions, necessarily colors this compilation and arrangement of surname studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses.
